Spoken World: Croatian ReviewMy import/export business with Croatian companies and the courses I teach at the Polytechnic University of Pula don't absolutely require that I speak Croatian - most of my colleagues speak and write English very well. But when we get together for business or especially as family and friends, they are always happy to hear that I have mastered at least "phrase book" Croatian.
After four or five other tape/CD/book self-study products, I have found that the the Spoken World Croatian program by Living Language is absolutely the best on the market. Each of the others has a fatal flaw - CD only, book only, unclear or regional words or pronunciation, too basic, too advanced, etc. Finally, this product offers a great balance of printed and recorded material, vocabulary that is actually used in the regions where I work (Istria, Zagreb, northern Damatian coast), and a pace that nails it for someone with average language skills.
Specific strengths include very clear enunciation on the CD's, early familiarization with pronouns and verb forms (especially the critical past tense), and simplified gramatical rules for pluralization and other common usage that covers the majority of common communication, both for business and recreation.
The only shortcomings so far are not shortcomings of the course, but the way I use it - most often while driving long stretches of rural freeway. My dashboard stereo doesn't let me back up to repeat just a word or phrase. And my ability to read from the book is limited by my ability to drive responsibly. Solutions include using a portable CD player instead of the car stereo, and reading more at home where I don't have to concentrate on safely passing trucks.
Whether you already own Croatian language self-study programs or are looking for your first, you won't regret getting this one. I teach English technical writing to Croatian students and young professionals, but if I taught Croatian I'd make this the required text for my courses.
