Berlitz Essential Spanish (Berlitz Essentials) (Spanish Edition) (English and Spanish Edition) ReviewAt less than $15, you can't really complain about a well-designed book with an accompanying audio CD (the 20 dialogues are read by native speakers and professional actors). However, I would recommend this book for false beginners (people who already have some notions of the language, maybe that they learned years ago). The long dialogues are good and contain a lot of useful and realistic vocabulary; they are translated and each lesson contains a recap list of the vocabulary seen in the dialogue, as well as a couple of pages of exercises (answer key in the back). Unfortunately, each lesson is drowned in several pages of grammar explanations on different topics. You get through pretty much your whole basic Spanish grammar in only 20 lessons, including the dreaded subjunctives. Even though the grammar points are illustrated by example sentences (not on the audio CD), this book would have benefited from less grammar or additional dialogues to support the endless flow of new grammar information. Good for false beginners and low-intermediate learners who will enjoy a thorough grammar refresher.
