SmartItalian Audio CDs Intermediate/Advanced - Learn Italian as spoken by Real Italian People (English and Italian Edition) ReviewThis approach to learning Italian has worked very well for me. Before trying the Intermediate/Advanced Level, I worked through the Beginner Level. The main attraction of the course was the people -- the "Real Italians" -- whose conversations were recorded. I didn't feel bored by repeated listening, as each one discussed an aspect of their lives.
Each conversation has a transcript and an accompanying translation. The translations make an attempt to be idiomatic, rather than literal. This sometimes makes things more difficult, in my opinion. For example, on the first Beginner lesson, "che stranamente in realta" was translated in the booklet as "and to tell you the truth," which seems too far off from the English cognates, "that strangely, in reality."
Besides the translation in the booklet, at the Beginner Level there is also an additional translation on the CD, phrase by phrase, English and Italian. I found this very helpful for practicing, and it often gave an alternate translation.
At the Intermediate/Advanced Level, this translation step is eliminated. The conversations are repeated at a faster pace and with longer groups of words.
The Advanced conversations are a little harder to understand, which is sometimes due to the speed, sometimes the speaker's pronunciation, and sometimes background noises.
Overall, I thought the Beginner Level prepared me well for the Intermediate/Advanced Level, and I've learned a lot of vocabulary and grammar in a natural, fun way.
One tip -- I found it helpful to carry around a copy of the conversations, to review at odd moments throughout the day.
