Spoken and Written Discourse: A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective (Contemporary Studies in International Political Communication) ReviewI had to write a review in response to the last one, lest that influence any prospective reader. This book is honest about its intentions: it sets out to give an exhaustive evaluation of the existing material about the differences between written and oral traditions. It does not innovate much, but for those readers curious about the literature on this extremely important topic, but who might not have a good idea of where to start, it is perfect. It presents information the way a very good professor might do. To criticize it because it treats its topic "as if that were the only thing in the world" seems inane. Is a book on oral/written discourse intrinsically faulty because it doesn't take into account the entire span of topics possible? Might as well criticize Darwin for confining himself to evolution and not even touching on such important topics as dance, celtic mythology, Taoism, etc. Anyway, this is a very good and very scholarly introduction that is easy to read and entertaining.Spoken and Written Discourse: A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective (Contemporary Studies in International Political Communication) Overview
This volume presents a systematic, reasonably exhaustive, and critical view of the existing scientific literature on the differences between speech and writing and, particularly, the cognitive and cultural implications of these differences. It is unique in its multidisciplinary scope and analytical depth as it brings together, for the first time, this multiplicity of theory and evidence from varied disciplines.
