Early Modern English ReviewThis is a readable and helpful book on Early Modern English. It approaches the topic from different angles so the reader comes away with a well-rounded understanding. The chapters cover such topics as how attitudes to English changed over the centuries (first regarded as "barbarous", then as an eloquent language), the development of grammar, and the changes of meanings of words. There are helpful examples.
From my own study of Early Modern English documents, I found Barber's conclusions to be accurate, though not always complete. When it comes to grammar, he is gifted to make simple what is complex.
