NorthStar, Listening and Speaking 1 with MyNorthStarLab (3rd Edition) ReviewThis book need serious revisions. First, the test questions are often unclear or have multiple right answers. The book does not come with a test generator, so the teacher must completely rewrite all the tests, especially if s/he wants multiple versions.
Second, Pearson-Longman no longer gives one the option of buying the book without the lab. The lab significantly increases the price. The lab is a nice tool, but doesn't add that much to the class and is only practical to use in a classroom that is equipped with a computer for each student unless you happen to get students who are all well versed in computers. As most ESL teacher know, this is usually not the case!
Third, the vocabulary is not suitable for high-beginners. Students at this level need to be focusing on learning words from the GSL (the most common 2000 words in English). Most of the target vocabulary in the book is not on this list!!! Some of the words are so offbeat that I would not focus on them at any level! For example, on of the target words are LP (short for long playing record). I cannot for the life of me figure why this was chosen as target word! This word should have either been edited out or had the definition as a footnote!
Finally, the listening sections tend to be way too difficult for high-beginners.
On a positive note, the format is nice and the topics are interesting. With some heavy revision, this book has the potential to be good. If you are teaching with this at the high-beginner level, expect to have to supplement heavily in order to catch your learners up.
