Colloquial Tamil: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series) ReviewAs an adult Tamil learner, I have found Asher and Annamalai's "Colloquial Tamil" a useful part of my collection. The dialogues are useful, the CD is helpful, and the many exercises are good learning tools
The transliterated text does have some limitations, as others have pointed out. I don't think you will get far unless you make the effort to learn to read Tamil. Similarly, the discussion of Tamil grammar, which occurs in paragraphs at the end of each chapter, would be hard to follow if the book is read alone.
However, these weaknesses can be overcome when the book is read in conjunction with Hart's Tamil for Beginners and Schiffman's A Reference Grammar of Spoken Tamil (Reference Grammars).
