American Accent Training: Grammar with Audio CDs ReviewAs a college professor, I receive many review copies in the course of a semester. I was pleasantly surprised at AAT: Grammar. I have been using Ann Cook's accent book for years and have often wished there were a way to integrate her methodology with the grammar and writing needs of my students. I have started using this book with ESL students at levels ranging from true beginners to fairly advanced. My immediate feedback overall is positive. I was impressed by how comprehensive the initial testing is, including grammar, listening comprehension and a writing sample. The book starts out with an introduction to the most basic sentence type and moves through each of the tenses in a logical progression. I would say that Cook's major innovation is the Grammar Box on page xii, which ingeniously lets a student see all the tenses at one time, plus the various forms of each one. It's amazing, but at a glance, a student can see the active and passive voices, main verbs and the verb to be, the negative and question forms, the continuous, modal and causative. I have never seen the totality of grammar explained better than in this simple grid.
I appreciate the 80-hour curriculum provided in the book, so even a new instructor can allocate sufficient time to each topic, interweaving grammar and accent. It covers the eight parts of speech, intonation, word connections and pronunciation, using a combination of exercises and authentic materials. As an online educator, I was curious about what kind of support they offered online, and it seems to be a community-type site with a message board, chat and podcasts.
A couple of minor quibbles would be that some of the traditional verb terminology such as the perfect tense and the conditional have been renamed to the real and unreal duo. Being old school myself, I was at first taken aback, but I have come to embrace this because they are actually more descriptive than the traditional terms, particularly when supported by the icons in the grammar box. Adjective clauses have similarly been renamed reverse modifiers, which enables a student to see the relationship between a regular adjective (nice people) and a post-positional modifying clause (people who are nice).
Overall, however, I would recommend this to students and educators alike.American Accent Training: Grammar with Audio CDs OverviewThis book and audio compact disc program instructs students of English as a second language in the elements of grammar, presenting a grammar review that emphasizes speech and correct pronunciation. The compact discs include spoken dictations for each of the book's ten chapters. Students start by writing out what they hear, and then comparing what they have written with the book's printed version. In the process, they begin learning the elements of grammar, staring with the simple present tense of the verb "to be" and progressing to all other tenses and parts of speech. Students gradually learn how to use English words and pronounce them properly in grammatically correct sentences. Following each chapter's introductory sentence, they are given a brief story. A short test at the end of each chapter helps them determine their learning progress. The dictations start out quite simple and become progressively more difficult from one chapter to the next. The book is filled with charts and illustrations to facilitate students' learning progress.
