Concise Grammar for English Language Tea ReviewI'm always a bit wary of books with titles like 'Rapid English', 'Grammar the Easy Way', etc, implying speed, fun and laughter from cover to cover. Everyone knows that learning and teaching a new language is not quite so easy, and I believe that the emphasis should be on clear structural guidelines with meaningful examples and exercises. A Concise Grammar for English Language Teachers has the required clear structure, many examples and tasks (+ answers at the back). One or two tasks were a little too difficult for me to understand, but apart from that I have no other quibbles.
I liked the ease with which Penston got the basics of grammar down, nicely organized and readable from the start, which makes this book both a practical teacher's course and quick reference guide. I specially liked the time lines explaining problem verb tenses (a picture is worth a thousand words...), the use of 'tree-diagrams' breaking down sentences, and the 'cut-out' matching tasks; generally, the use of 'visual aids'. All the above makes the book user friendly and 'light' (literally and figuratively).
Also worth mentioning: the book includes many clearly labelled teaching notes with practical suggestions; the teaching note on page 12 actually comprises a whole methodology lesson on how to `run through' an exercise list. There are also full page (A4) lists of verb tenses, irregular verbs, conditional clauses, typical errors for analysis and more.
In summary, A Concise Grammar for English Language Teachers is as close as it gets to the ideal `Grammar the Easy Way'.
