A Text-Book of Modern Spanish as Now Written & Spoken in Castile & the Spanish-American Republics. ReviewI am a translator/interpreter by trade and came across this book to add to my collection of references. What a treasure! This book is exhaustive and concise at the same time, plus easy to understand. It is well organized so that a student of Spanish at any level will be able to get something out of it... the earliest chapters are appropriate for beginners and the material gets more complex as the book carries on.
This book was written in the late 1890's and, as such, has no copyright in force. There are a number of places online where you can read this book for free. One of them is Google Books. You can read it online or download it in PDF format (like I did). I also have it set up on my iPhone so that when I'm stuck someplace I can read a chapter or two. The only possible downsides I can see to the digital downloads are these: no hard copy to thumb through and it's not the most up to date version of the book. From what I understand, it was edited and updated in the 1950's.
So far, for the older version, there are only a handful things that I've seen that have changed in the Spanish language. The two biggies are that "a" no longer carries an accent (it's written as "á" in the book) and usted is currently abreviated "Ud." instead of "V.").
This book is almost 700 pages long, so I must make the disclaimer that I have not read it in its entirety before posting my review (shame, shame, I know.
