A Short History of Snakes: New and Collected Poems ReviewI was so startled by how eloquent, was a Jenkins review of Larkin's letters to Monica, that I investigated him. He is well known in England, winner of several awards, runner up for some of the biggest. The poems in this volume were as brutally frank (or should I say "less deceived") as some of Larkin's on sex. My comments range beyond this volume, though. Jenkins has a wonderful an ear for internal rhymes. Plainly, he has learned a lot from the post war Brits, and that's good. The subject matter is broad, and escapes the academy-- thank god! Like many fine contemporary poets, he has had to live in bad neighborhoods Larkin only visited on the sly. He knows down and outs as neighbors, but unlike Charles Bukowski, who also did, never sentimentalizes them. I've just discovered Jenkins so don't take any of this as a long considered opinion. I am excited about him, saw this book lacked reviews, and wanted to get something into print about him. Try him.
