As a dramatist he compared himself favourably to Shakespeare (well, no great artist lacks a healthy ego), and he certainly knew his craft. Some of the views he held were dodgy (for example on Stalin's Russia), but whenever he expressed himself he was incapable of a dull sentence - or an unclear one. Truly a genius of the English language.
