Takes you out of mundane in life and reminds you that life and you are special and magical, even during your worst and most trying psychological moments. Marjorie Perloff This collection represents some of the most popular performance poems from live radio broadcasts, mainly on several KUT-FM programs in Austin, Texas, at the University of Texas, Austin campus. The art and music scene in central Texas during the 1980s set many trends, established major artists, and originated movements that took off around the world along with the styles that remain local to Austin and make it culturally unique. My performance poetry was part of a creative hybridization dynamic since I was able as an artist-poet to cross into avenues growing out of the stellar music scene. Austin audiences were quite spoiled by the genius of songwriters and musical talent working for the door at many famous nightspots, including Townes Van Zandt, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lucinda Williams, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many more. They appreciated experimentation of all sorts. Nevertheless, my work was completely on the fringes of theater, literature, and music until 1981 when I began collaborating with composer/musician D'Jalma Garnier in a way that had not been successfully accomplished prior to East of Eden Band. Instead of an ad hoc approach to blending book and print poetry reading with generic music at poetry readings or a classical music approach using poems for the libretto in an opera, I wrote poems only for oral performance with music. I rejected the silence of print poems in 1977 and did not return to writing for print until 2004. Writing poems knowing Garnier would compose music for each one freed me to loosen up and have more fun in a much less lonely genre that I named performance poetry. The writing emphasized rhythms with simple words that were often selected by thinking about what would be fun to articulate in public. What would audiences enjoy momentarily sharing the same space and air with live performers? What would surprise someone riding in a car with the radio on?
