The Art of Sign Language (Pocket Guide Series) ReviewThis is a book of photographs of signs, with simple descriptions printed below each. No grammar is given. The author explains that no grammar is necessary, since he thinks you can sign using English grammar. That might be true for Signed English, but not for American Sign Language. Some Signed English signs are the same as those used in American Sign Language, but a beginner would not know enough of both to know which are which. Because sign language is so regional, those in the US will want to know that the author is a hearing Canadian who now resides in England.

Those who have spent years studying the grammar, syntax, sentence structure, and linguistics of American Sign Language may be stunned by the author's statement that ASL has few grammatical rules to adhere to, and that Signed English is the preferred mode for "hearing impaired" children.
Even those who prefer Signed English might find this book occasionally frustrating, since there are several pages where the written description of the sign does not match the photograph. For example, on page 74, the description for the word "dentist" says to tap the right side of the mouth with the right "D" hand, but the photo shows the person tapping the right side of his mouth with an "F" hand.
Although beginners might be attracted to the photographs, they will surely need someone more advanced to explain how to use the signs they see. Better sign language books for the beginner are:

A Basic Course in American Sign Language, by Humphries, Padden, and O'Rourke, which includes ASL vocabulary, sentence structure, and dialogues.
Signing Illustrated, by Mickey Flodin, a dictionary with both ASL and Signed English signs.
