Hearing and Deafness: An Introduction for Health and Education Professionals ReviewTake my review with a grain of salt, because I will admit that I have only read one chapter of this book. However, after reading that one chapter, I would not be able to trust anything that is said in the rest of the book, because there were so many inaccuracies and misrepresentations in those few pages.The chapter (10) is very idealistic and seems to be written from a one-dimensional fantasy world. The information provided is misleading in its simplicity when it isn't just flat-out wrong.
For example, the authors say, on page 277: "Roush and Kamo (2008) point out that, historically, hearing loss was confirmed after weeks, months, or sometimes years of parental suspicion that they child had a hearing loss. Fortunately this is now an issue of the past, because hearing loss is now identified in early infancy." In other words, the authors imply that all hearing loss is now caught at birth, and go on to talk about what this means for how a provider should handle families and deaf children. However, if you go to the original source that they reference, what is actually stated is, "Historically, the diagnosis of hearing loss was a confirmation of what parents had suspected over a period of weeks or months. Now, with the widespread implementation of newborn hearing screening, hearing loss is often identified in early infancy." The original source correctly states that universal newborn hearing screening OFTEN catches hearing loss in early infancy, but that is very different from saying that missing an infant's deafness "is an issue of the past."
This is just one of a staggering number of examples of misinformation and misrepresentation in the small section of the book I read. There was absolutely no new useful information provided to me, and virtually all of the information I knew about prior to reading the book was wrong, twisted, or simplified to the point of uselessness verging on incorrectness.
