Colloquial Danish (Colloquial Series) ReviewThough Colloquial Danish is in some respects a good introductory book, it is seriously lacking in the one area of the language most challenging for English speakers, namely, pronunciation. Unlike most other textbooks in the Colloquial series, there is no introductory section on pronunciation guiding you through sound-spelling relationships-only a very inadequate four-page section in the back. (It is quite misleading in its approximation of most of the vowels-just listen to the native speakers on the tapes-and its dismissal of the glottal stop-"a slight coughing-like stop that can turn up almost anywhere"-is inexcusable.) This deficiency would be somewhat remedied if there were lots of text material on the tapes, but unfortunately there isn't. In contrast with, say, the Swedish and Dutch volumes in the Colloquial series (which share some of the dialogue content), none of the reading passages in the book are on the tape, which disappointed me greatly. If the book is ever redone, I suggest the authors/editors include a simplified phonetic transcription of ALL the words used in the book, either with the lessons or in the vocabulary at the end, plus recordings of the reading passages. Danish spelling is difficult enough for Danish schoolchildren, and foreigners can hardly be expected to master it without more help than this book gives.Colloquial Danish (Colloquial Series) OverviewThis new edition of Colloquial Danish has been completely rewritten to feature the contemporary language of Denmanrk with new material on new technologies and topical information on the country. The author is someone who enjoys using grammatical terminology and so a first-time language learner might find the book heavy going. My advice is very strongly not to buy the book without buying the cassettes as well- that holds true for most languages but is particulary true for this one- since Panjabi is tonal and because there are many sounds that are do not have equivalents in English. Two small things: First, the lessons on Panjabi script are in a separate section at the back of the book. I have studied other Indian languages and feel like it is certainly possible to learn the script as one learns to speak- it's not an unphonetic language by any means. Also, there isn't much about what to do next, once one has completed this course. The American Heritage Children's Dictionary ReviewI bought this dictionary for my daughter when she started first grade - knowing that it would be a while until her reading skills were good enough for her to use it. Beginning in about the 2nd grade, she started to use it regularly - and in 3rd grade (last year) she used it all the time. Terrific first dictionary for a kid, with great pictures in full color, good art and illustrations, nice bold type, etc. What's nice about it is that it's layout is just like a grown-up dictionary - which they will switch to in time. This is a perfect dictionary for a grade schooler to learn to do 'research' with appropriate elementary school/junior high vocabularly. Its definately written at a linguist level and above. Way more information than will help you on the streets of Kabul. Word Nerd ReviewIf you're a curious type who spends a lot of time writing, reading, playing trivia or Scrabble, this book will be helpful. Structured as a dictionary-style reference book, it isn't for readers looking for storytelling about linguistics; it's more for trivia purposes, to enhance your vocabulary piecemeal. It is well-suited for skimming through, picking up anecdotes on a plane ride, or leaving out on a coffee table for guests to pick up and read a page, learn 3 new things and move on. It could also benefit a student trying to boost their vocabulary prior to taking the SAT or ACT, if they glanced through a few times a week leading up to the tests.
Not all the descriptions are "fascinating," really, but informative and concisely explain the roots or connections between words. Sometimes only proper pronunciation or acceptable adaptations of the word (like plurals or synonyms) are given, and again this can be helpful to clarify your word usage even if it isn't exactly entertaining. I wish it had some illustrations, just to break it up the text a bit. The Dictionary of Wordplay ReviewDave Morice's latest book, The Dictionary of Wordplay (Teachers & Writers), is his seventeenth published effort to paint the alphabetic rainbow of the amazing English language. Previous works include eleven volumes of poetry, four books on wordplay and writing, three on cartooning, and a book on computers.
Why a dictionary of wordplay?
"Wordplay is always just a word or two away from the words we speak, hear, read, and write," Morice writes in the introduction to his dictionary. "It is present in the home, the school, the office, the store, the streets. It's on television all the time, especially on ABC."
He got the idea for a wordplay dictionary while editing the "Kickshaws" column for Word Ways magazine. The more familiar Morice became with contemporary wordplay, the more it seemed inevitable that he should write a dictionary. Surprised none had been compiled, he morphed the appendix to his doctoral dissertation-"Wordplay in Children's Picture Books"-into an appendix of wordplay terms that eventually grew into a full-blown dictionary.
With the recent publication of The Dictionary of Wordplay, Morice has given life to an astounding work. Indeed, The Times Literary Supplement of London, in a rare burst of approval, calls it "The most ingenious publication of the century so far" (TLS, March 23, 2001).
The Dictionary of Wordplay is for all lovers of language. For die-hard crossword puzzle workers, jumble fanatics, or Scrabble players as well as writers, educators, and linguistics, it's a "must-have" for the home or office reference shelf. Here are some samples from the 1,234 entries:
· Charade: A set of words formed by re-spacing-but not rearranging-the letters of another word, phrase, or sentence:
BEDEVIL = BED + EVILPLEASURE = PLEA + SURE CRUMBLED = CRUMB + LEDCHICAGO = CHIC + AGO
·Exquisite Corpse: Three or four players write an article and an adjective on a sheet of paper and then fold the paper to cover the words. The players exchange papers, add a noun to the new paper, and fold the paper again. They repeat this procedure with a verb and then with another article and adjective, and they finish with another noun. The results are read aloud to general bafflement.
·Hidden Middle Name or Overlapping Word: Take a person's first and last name and see if the letters join in the middle to form another name or word: oMAR SHArif, daLE Evans, ezRA Pound, and hORATIO Nelson
·TWENTY NINE: Write out the number 29 in capital letters: TWENTY NINE. Then count the number of straight lines in the number's name. It's the only number that counts the straight lines in its name. There are 29!"
A native of St. Louis, Dave Morice lives in Iowa City, where he earned an M.F.A at the renowned Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. He is presently at work on the ever-expanding second edition to The Dictionary of Wordplay as well as The Dictionary of Incredible Words. His poems and cartoons have appeared in hundreds of magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Word Ways, and The Actualist Anthology. The structure of the language is difficult and counter-intuitive for English speaking learners, but this book manages to be grammatically thorough without becoming abstruse. The dialogues are interesting and the CDs are excellent quality. Apparently for American readers, the publishers felt it necessary to "tart up" the title to THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN. Regardless, Simon Winchester's story between the covers is splendidly told, without sensationalising even the most horrific details, revealed matter of factly well into the book. The story is that of Dr. Minor - an American Civil War surgeon - who went mad amid the horrors of "The Wilderness." Pursued by his nightly demons, he later wound up in grim South London where he shot dead a totally innocent man. Sent to Broadmoor - a sprawling lunatic asylum near London - he became one of the most valuable contributors to the compilation of the magisterial Oxford English Dictionary. Winchester recounts - correcting but not spoiling a wonderful story - the meeting between the OED's legendary James Murray and his reclusive contributor. While ultimately Dr Minor's story is a tragic one - not the least for his hapless victim - it is also a tribute to the persistence of the human mind. Cleverly presented with appropriate OED citings, this book is not to be missed for anyone interested in words.
