Albania 3rd (Bradt Travel Guide Albania) ReviewGloyer's book inspired my trip to Albania, and it was useful every step of the way.
She offers tips on how to get through the airport without hassles, which hotels are worth booking, and what to see in just about every part of Albania a tourist might go to. Her writing style is well beyond the norm for travel guides, without a hint of the Weltschmerz that afflicts so many travel writers. She has a sly sense of humor, and will even boldly tell you to avoid a hotel run by the local mafia. Also, there aren't many travel guides that include tips on how to help alleviate poverty and suffering in the country being visited, but Ms Gloyer thoughtfully includes such information. She obviously loves the country and is very fond of its people, and it's quite a gift to Albania to have such an honest and worthwhile travel guide available in English.

Egyptian Arabic (Lonely Planet Phrasebooks) ReviewI lived in Egypt for nine months, studying Arabic intensively. I have bought probably twenty or so textbooks and phrasebooks on Arabic, both Standard and Colloquial Egyptian. Briefly, let me provide an overview of this book's strong and weak points:
1. Excellent for someone who is genuinely interested in Egyptian Arabic, but perhaps too much for a week-long interest.
2. Excellent vocabulary resource with a variety of subjects. I always used it as my first reference in everyday conversation. As far as I know, no one has written such a comprehensive yet approachable book for Egyptian Arabic.
3. Weak on teaching Egyptian Arabic grammar. It gives an overview. If you have already had an introduction, you will be able to extrapolate grammar through common sense but this book does not explicitly break down sentence structure or conjugation.
I gave this book five stars, despite its weaknesses, because it far superior to other Egyptian Arabic books-text books or phrase books. For folks who've been to Italy, I'd imagine it's even more amusing than it is for us who haven't been over the pond.
There are a few useful items within, such as the names of important medicines and whatnot, but overall, this is just a book for fun. If you're really looking to pick up A Real Phrasebook, be sure to grab something else besides this one, and perhaps keep this one in your pocket (it's *really* tiny!) for when you feel like freaking out your cab driver or some such.Wicked Italian for the Traveler (Wicked Series) (English and Italian Edition) OverviewMore than just a phrasebook with a sense of humor, Wicked Italian, from the series with over one million copies in print, is a cultural survival guide. Confronted with a forgetful innkeeper you'll do better than mumble an apology by learning to say Allora dormiamo nella lobby. ("In that case, we will sleep here in the lobby"). Forced to wait for your dinner you'll say: Bisogna essere Primo Ministro per essere servito qui? ("Must one be Prime Minister to get service here?") Women traveling alone will finally have the phrases they need at their fingertips, such as Contento tu ("Dream on"), Guardi che chiamo la polizia ("I'll call the police"), and Neanche se fosse l'ultimo uomo sulla terra ("Not if you were the last man on earth"). On the other hand, a chapter on "Making Love" teaches the delicate language of amore. Wicked Italian is the next best thing to being named Marcello or Sophia. Ciao!

South American Handbook, 87th: Longest running English language travel guide, The South American Handbook (Footprint - Handbooks) ReviewThe Footprint guide definately gives the traveler a different itinerary than the typical Lonely Planet guided souls. Often, with the domination of Lonely Planet suggestions being taken by travelers, certain "Gringo trails" are forged and well trampled. Footprint gives the next best comprehensive review of traveling in South America, but makes the travler leave more to their own judgement instead of relying on a guide. I traveled with both my Footprint Guide and my partner's Lonely Planet. The LP is a better guide for nuts and bolts, but the prices are often inacurate because of the popularity increase, which rapidly rises prices in South America.But the Guide has its drawbacks. If you are extremely map based, then go with the LP. Footprint's maps are not nearly as good. Also, for specific suggestions on exactly what a traveler SHOULD do, LP is better. Bottom line is, if you can fit them both in, do it.
