As a teacher, I picked up this book thinking it would be a good extra-curricular conversational guide. It is filled with errors, errors of pronunciation, errors of translation, errors of grammar. To a student just learning the intricacies of the Korean language, this book would do more harm than good. Tuttle should pull this book from the shelves and fix it. Obviously, their rush for money overwhelmed their concern for quality.
In short, do not buy this book. This book provides the basics needed to converse in simple Korean. Intended for beginners, it concentrates only on key grammar and pronunciation points. Most of the lessons include exercises that reinforce vocabulary items and grammatical structures. Phrases and sentences are recycled for long-term learning. Over 200 simple illustrations allow even beginners to express themselves.

Mastering Korean (Mastering Series/Level 1) ReviewOkay, I am the first to admit that I should have known better than to think that a book and tapes could help you "master" a language, but this book is almost useless. First, I don't know why, the book is romanized, which means that it uses the English alphabet. It is so hard to learn Korean this way. Secondly, the dialouges on the tapes are extremely fast. It is hard to follow and I speak some Korean. Thirdly, the examples are mindless substitutions. Easy, but useless. Anyway, I know there are not many good texts out there for Korean, and good ones with audio are rarer still, but I don't think that this is worth it.Mastering Korean (Mastering Series/Level 1) OverviewThe textbook for Barron's intensive language immersion course in Korean has been updated for Fall 2005. Teach Yourself Korean: A Complete Course for Beginners (English and Korean Edition) Review"Teach Yourself Korean" is, as the last reader said, very good for those who want to learn Basics of Korean... it isn't aimed at Business, and it's definately NOT a Phrasebook (those are terrible anyway). However, I find 2 major flaws with this course. First, aside from the dialouge for each chapter, Korean script is not used. Anyone who wants to learn Korean MUST master its writing system (it's not hard). New Vocabulary for each lesson is done in Romanization. Once you learn Korean script, you will find that reading korean script is much easier than any system of romanization. Well, that can still be remedied with a dictionary, so no harm done really. The second flaw is that one the accompanying tapes, the dialogue is read very slowly. For people who have no prior experience with Korean, this is good, as vowels and whatnot tend to be blended together often which an make distinguishing words rather difficult. But learners with more experience might not like this. It's soo slow sometimes, like this, "An-nyeong ha----se---yo." Anyway, this is overall a good course. "Teach Yourself Korean" combined with "College Korean" should make an execellent selfstudy program for anybody. Read and Speak Korean for Beginners with Audio CD, 2nd Edition (Read & Speak for Beginners) ReviewSo far, I've been happy with it. I just started using the book, and it is helping me reinforce some previous practice of the alphabet by introducing vocab a little at a time. In the first topic, there is a mistake that stood out to me a lot they had the name "Helen" not as '', but with ' in place of the first '. The flashcards at the back at the book (albeit nice to help with the learning process) have this same mistake, but the Hangul for "Helen" and "Mary" or on each other's card (Helen is still wrong on it). The card with "Minjun" in Hangul also has "Mimsu" on the front. Other than that, I haven't noticed any other mistakes. So far, I've found the amount of exercises, vocab, and language information given to be efficient for learning it all; not too much and too little.
