German Grammar Made Easy (Hodder Arnold Publication) ReviewAn excellent reference to German grammar.
Does not teach the language per se, but an invaluable resource for grammatical questions.
If you want just phrases, then this book is not for you, but if you want to compose your own sentences, then it's a must-have.
Very well organized, too, unlike many books I've consulted.
The CD is pretty good, too - many fill in the blanks type exercises testing your knowlege of declensions, conjugations, prepositions and so on. German: 2nd Ed. (Pimsleur Quick and Simple) ReviewI'd heard and read about the Pimsleur tapes and was curious to see if they could add anything to the lessons in my Hugo German in Three Months course. And I can say there are both pros and cons.
The Pros: You absolutely will actually begin THINKING in German with these tapes from the get go. There are three speakers - 2 native Germans (male & female) and an english-speaking tutor. The Pimsleur method seems to be based on a special (and HIGHLY effective) form of drilling and recall. The tutor and native speakers will put the words into small blocks (which you again are drilled endlessly on). From the short blocks they will then show you how to insert other short word blocks (again always words you'd previouly been drilled extensively on) to make progressively longer and more complex sentences. Then the tutor will begin to set up a scenario (for example, you sitting on the bus next to a woman and wanting to start a conversation with her). One of the scenarios will be something like, "Tell the woman you understand only a little German". Which in this case is the phrase, "Ich verstehe nur ein bischen Deutsch." You will recognize and understand this phrase or any of the words within it without ever adding the separate step of mentally translating it first into English. Congratulations - you've just achieved the Holy Grail of speaking a language - thinking and speaking those words or phrases like a native born to it. In terms of effectiveness it has no peer.
And now for the cons: Yes it is VERY effective. However, I now understand why some reviewers of similar Pimsleur courses have complained that it gives you a somewhat limited vocabulary. What you do learn you understand like a native. But the method is VERY repetitive - it must be to force you to think in the language itself from the very beginning (they call it Anticipated Recall).
It also provides no explanation of grammar or syntax. Or at least not in the Basic course (it may be different in the Comprehensive Courses). You'll speak the phrases but you won't really know WHY they are structured the way they are. Thus, even if you learned for example, additional verbs on your own you won't know the rules that would permit you to substitute the new verb in sentences you already know. It leads to a really odd result. You'll be highly fluent with the phrases and words you learned. And illiterate and ignorant of just about everything else spoken or said to you (hence these tapes make sure one of the phrases you have burned into your head is "ich verstehe nicht" i.e. "I don't understand".
This is why I have a mixed opinion of these tapes - at least if you use them alone. The Basic course just doesn't teach you enough to depend on them alone. But it does give an excellent idea of how the Comprehensive Courses will work.
I would say for maximum effectiveness it would be good to combine them with a more traditional tutoring course such as one from Hugo, Living Language or Berlitz. The traditional courses will give you a lot more vocabulary and the grammar to understand why the language is spoken the way it is. Then get the Pimsleur Comprehensive courses so that it will drill you in actually thinking and speaking what you've learned.
To sum up, view the Basic Course as a short introduction of how the Pimsleur Comprehensive Courses teaching method works. Sort of a "try-before-you-buy" deal. If you're like me it'll convince you that it's worthwile to buy the advanced tapes. But don't depend on this Basic set to teach you a lot of conversational German - one of the many tourist phrase/cassette sets will have many times the number of words and phrases you would want to know before vacationing in a German-speaking country.German: 2nd Ed. Oxford Take Off in German: A Complete Language Learning Pack Book & 4 CDs ReviewThis is my first time with a language course of this sort. There are four "Audio CDs" with the course, NOT CD-ROM as Amazon lists it. The course focuses on listening and trying to pick up as much as you can without looking at the written transcriptions, then working with the transcriptions later and studying various rules. I find that there are several minor errors, for example (the book claims that "grauen Anzuge" are the blue suits (should be gray I believe) and some of the dialogue is just silly. There are reviews and tests after each section and frequently a test expects you to know words that you won't learn until following sections - I consider this to be an error but perhaps they want you to buy their dictionary as well. I find that I frequently look up a word has been thrown in without it's translation being included in the lesson yet. Despite those problems, I am learning very quickly with very little effort so they must be doing something right.I usually listen to each section several times, then listen again while reading the transcription in the booklet. Then I read alone and review earlier sections in the book to get the more difficult rules down. The price is low and I was able to pick up quite a lot in just a couple of weeks. The book is small enough to fit in your back pocket and contains a lot of grammatical information at the back in addition to the lessons. As you move through the lessons they begin to give some of the instructions in German and it happens at a gradual pace after you've learned enough to understand.You will need a CD player with a convienient pause (remote control helps) as there is very little space after the phrases you are to repeat. In my opinion anonymous reviews are worthless and should be ignored, especially those that are ripping a product. So here is what I proudly have to say about this product.
I've had a strong desire to learn German since I had the opportunity to visit there a few years ago. I've purchased and used several of the CD audio courses. The first lesson that anyone should understand when trying to learn a new language from audio CD's is that no one course is the absolute one and only to purchase. Taken together however various courses cover many different areas and teach different things. I found this course is an EXCELLENT addition to the other courses I've purchased and taught me new things that I had not encountered before. I especially liked hearing the pronounciation of words slowly and distinctly which is a little different from many of the other programs. I also really liked the content on these CD's which teaches basic material that is commonly used and needs to be learned as a foundation for the language.
The person who put this course together and the native speakers who contributed their voice talents to this product have done a terrific job. I have listened to the older version of Instant Immersion German and this product (the 'New and Improved') in no way, shape or form is related to the old product and is in fact a COMPLETE rewrite and re-recording of the course. This is a far superior work that is worth your time and money. If you include this product as part of a set of tools for learning German you will have an advantage over others. The only mistake that you could make however is in thinking that you only need this one product. German III, Comprehensive: Learn to Speak and Understand German with Pimsleur Language Programs ReviewI will probably repeat a lot of what others have said, but here goes. I think the real strength of these courses is that they get you to converse. You practice conversation. You talk, you listen. Will you learn lots of vocabulary? No. Will you learn all the grammar rules? No. Can you learn a language with only these courses? Of course not. You will need other materials, courses, books, whatever. But they are another tool in your toolbox to help you achieve your goal. What they give you is practice at speaking real conversations. And you will pick up some vocabulary and grammar along the way, what you need to succeed in these lessons.
I've been through all 4 levels and found them all great. Including level 4 (German Plus). This one has a bad rap, I think mostly because it's shorter than the rest. And certainly some of the new vocabulary is quite focused on one topic. But I found it added a lot of new conversational situations, and a lot of new grammar. Do you learn words that the average tourist doesn't need? Sure, but if you were just the average tourist, would you be buying these? We are only talking about a dozen or so words, it's not like your being forced to learn hundreds of words you'll never use.
Are they perfect? No, there are inconsistencies, there are silly little things here and there that I would call "editing" mistakes. And I really wish they'd give up the pretension that you only need to do each lesson once. I had to do each one at least 3 times before I could move on. But they are great for what they are. In-Flight German: Learn Before You Land ReviewThe blurb on the back of the package claims that if you work on this programme during your flight, you will learn enough of the language to get by. Unless Berlin has been moved to the surface of Mars, you will certainly not be able to absorb enough of this 60-minute course to even nearly get by. This is a CD "update" to Fast & Easy German (also by Living Language). In-Flight German boasts over 400 essential words & phrases (a 100 word increase from Fast & Easy). Less is sometimes better. Each phrase on In-Flight is only spoken once (rather than twice as on the Fast & Easy series), not enough if you want to gauge your progress. The native speakers are for the most part speaking clearly, but WAY too fast. It comes with a "boarding pass"(booklet with the entire script). If you are already familiar with the language, the In-Flight series might actually get you up to speed in between the in-flight movie & the meal (soda pop & peanuts). If you are trying to learn German, try Pimsleur's German I thru III ([cost more] but effective). Pimsleur German has 30 lessons in each unit, and will get you SPEAKING (the course is audio only) straight away. Pimsleur is by far the best course available. German with Michel Thomas is an all-audio (8 CD's, no book) course that gets VERY good results. Michel Thomas walks listeners through exercises that will gently guide you into the German language. Like Pimsleur, the Thomas method is time consuming. If you are short on time and need a "survival" course, get Language/30 German (by Educational Services Corp). Language/30 comes with 2 tapes and a booklet. If Fast & Easy German is still available, it is better than In-Flight German. The truly serious language learner will be wise to go through all 3 Pimsleur courses, then Michel Thomas, and finish up with Living Language Ultimate German Level I & II. The In-Flight series is an example of products with great marketing and poor quality that never gets off the runway.In-Flight German: Learn Before You Land OverviewLiving Language In-Flight German is the perfect boarding pass to learning German before you land.There's no better way to make use of all that spare time on a plane than to master the essentials of a language.This 60-minute program is the simplest way to learn just enough to get by in every situation essential to both the tourist and business traveler.The program covers everything from greetings and polite expressions to asking directions, getting around, checking into a hotel, and going to a restaurant.There are even sections for meeting people and spending a night on the town.Short lessons make In-Flight German easy to use, and a handy pocket-sized insert is included as a cheat sheet for use on the go.

501 German Verbs with CD-ROM (Barron's Foreign Language Guides) ReviewI really love this new edition of Strutz's text. This improves on the old version in its look and overall layout, plus it includes 27 written verb exercises with answers and explanations and a bonus CD-ROM. Granted the CD-ROM isn't extensive (hey, it's free), but it has a handful more of different types of exercises which, like the written exercises, gives you answers plus explanations. It's enough at least to let you see if you're on the right track and where you may need do more study. Like the earlier edition, it has a very nice overview of German verb tenses, plus new additional sections on prefix verbs and word order. Know that these sections are overviews and are hardly exhaustive, but that is not the goal of this book. It's main objective is to give you tools and the fundamental knowledge to better grasp and use German verb tenses. It's a supplemental text prefect for beginners and intermediate students who need the occasional reminder of what's what and what goes where, and also it's a helpful quick review for more advanced students (and perhaps a few teachers). If you need a more comprehensive grammar book, however, then get a comprehensive grammar book.
Likewise, this book contains only 501 verbs, so if you need a lexicon or a vocabulary building text, this isn't it. You'll need the appropriate text for such needs. What this book is useful for is teaching you how to conjugate German verbs properly, even ones not included in this book. In the front section, it gives you a list of 55 "essential" verbs, which if you were to take the time to study and learn thoroughly, can serve you as models for conjugating just about any verb in German. You really can't ask for a better, more applicable tool - this is basically how native speakers understand verbs. Plus, in the section for each of these 55 "essential" verbs, there is additional attention paid to prefixes. Naturally, it's not an exhuastive account of all the prefix verbs for that root verb, but it gives you the necessary basics.
The rest of the verbs are included because they are frequently used in general German usage, although you may not encounter some of these verbs if you are a beginner or immediate student. Bear in mind as well that this is an all-levels text, so even if you don't find some of the verbs included useful now, you may find them useful in later study.501 German Verbs with CD-ROM (Barron's Foreign Language Guides) OverviewThe most commonly used 510 German verbs are arranged alphabetically in a table format, one verb per page with English translation, and conjugated in all tenses and forms. The book's additional features include common idioms with example sentences to demonstrate verb usage and a grammar review. This book includes a bonus CD-ROM enclosed at no additional charge. The CD-ROM presents valuable exercises for students in German sentence completion, word completion, word matching, and conversational dialogue, with answers provided for all exercises.

Starting Out in German ReviewGreat language course for the price! I own several German audio courses, manuals and grammar books. This one is definitely one of my favorites. It is very compact - only 3 CD's. The text, with all the dialogues and vocabulary, can be easily downloaded and printed from the publisher's website. I did it myself. The course targets the basic everyday vocabulary and grammar. Specifically, it teaches the three cases of nouns ( Nominative, Dative, Accusative) as the forth - Genitive is not used in spoken language. It covers the present tense of verbs, which can also be used colloquially for the future tense ( i.e Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin )and towards the end it introduces the Perfect tense. Perfect is pretty much the only past tense used in spoken German, especially in southern Germany and Austria.
The quality of audio was also good. One of the speakers seems to have a southern accent. For instance, she is pronouncing letter "s" beginning a word as "s" in the word "see", not as "z" as I was taught. As German has more than one standard ( it is "pluricentric" ), I guess it is fine. In summary, the course delivers what it promises. It teaches a basic spoken language and provides a foundation on which a student can build to expand her knowledge of German in the future.Starting Out in German OverviewAll the German you need to get started in a simple audio-only program!Starting Out in German is a beginner-level program on 3 CDs, and it includes short and simple lessons and dialogues. It covers all the basics, with plenty of repetition and practice so it is ideal for audio-only learning. Starting Out in German is perfect if you want to learn while commuting, running errands, or at the gym, as well as if you want to learn at home and simply prefer an all-audio course.
