The International Medical Graduate's Guide to Us Medicine and Residency Training Reviewan Awesome publication that i see as a must have for every IMG to have a crisp clear understanding of not only, the US health system but also, the sequential steps and the corrects Dos and Dont's when applying for the match and preparing personal statments, LOR's and writing CV in a professional acceptable way.
the book is divided broadly in 2 major sections :section 1 deals with attempting to get a residency and all the major caveats
sections 2 : whats beyond this, how is ur life gona be when u go there and more importantly familiarizing the IMG with US health care system so its really a good basic foundation that would be an ice breaker and a gap closer between an IMG who never had an experience in the US and others who know the system.
if you are already familiar with the system or had an externship still this book is valuable
if ur an AMG = u shouldn't be reading this book because it would not add anything to you

Sure, their semantics may be easy for some native English speakers to deduce, but the exact meaning of their references to people, the senses and astronomy may elude others. And how would you apply these prefixes, roots and suffixes in a completely DIFFERENT context?
I've found that "Vocabulary Tools" impressively delivers on its subtitle: "Books for busy people who want fast results". As a Business ESL / ESP teacher and trainer, I had decided to investigate this book as a possible vocabulary-building solution for my students' test-taking and business dilemmas. In short, I had been searching for a productive, systematic method for learning and generating vocabulary that renders results in a reasonably short period of time. Moreover, I wanted an interactive book geared towards both native and non-native learners.
I've been really happy with my serendipitous discovery! I like how the activities in this book immediately engage the learner not only in comprehending new words but also in being able to generate words in diverse contexts. For example, students learn the meaning of words such as "fiduciary", "philogyny" and "pneumatometer" and then the methods in this book direct them to comprehend/use them in a completely different context, thereby solidifying their meaning.
The workbook format is great for visual and kinesthetic learners, and I definitely plan to continue to use this as a supplementary text in future Business ESL / ESP, Academic ESL reading courses and standardized test training workshops.

TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide: Test of English for International Communication with CD (Audio) ReviewAlthough this book does not provide you with a large number of helpful strategies or tips for understanding the TOEIC test (unless becoming more familiar with late-1970s tacky fashion styles is part of the TOEIC--check out the photos), it is the most important book to have for your TOEIC test preparation journey. This guide, prepared by ETS, is the only one that can give you practice with "real" TOEIC material. Test-preparation guides prepared by other companies try to approximate ETS' style, but they can never match the exact difficulty level of an actual ETS test. In addition, for (amount), TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide includes an ample number of practice exercises: There are two mini-tests, two complete tests, and practice questions for each of the seven sections. The authors include explanations for all of the answers too, which is always helpful. Working through all of this material should give you a decent understanding of and preparation for the TOEIC test. The major drawback of TOEIC Official Test Preparation Guide, as stated above, is that it doesn't really help you understand how the TOEIC is constructed (i.e. which grammar points are tested in Parts 5 and 6, what types of questions are most frequently asked in the listening section, etc.). However, since most of the material on the TOEIC is assessing your genuine level of English fluency, "tricks" such as this probably won't help you in the long run. Funny thing is, I didn't invest in any study guides. The most valuable resource in my experience comes directly from the CSET website. Download the Test Guides and pay particular attention to the English Subject Matter Requirements. Virtually all the content in the test is outlined on these 8 pages. I read it through, underlined all the terms and topics, then looked them all up on Wikipedia and cut and pasted together my own study guide. Using this strategy, I feel very confident that I passed. How to Prepare for the Michigan Test Battery ReviewErrors and mistakes aside, this book is really outdated. I can't imagine nothing has changed since 1982. The model tests, the listening part in particular, are not so helpful for all three tests used pretty much the same material even though the structures are changed. By the third time around, the student is of course more familiar with the "quesitons and statements" and therefore more likely to make a correct choice, which, unfortunately, is not going to be the case in the real test. Also there is no clear explanation on how to grade the test and convert the scores. The student is left clueless after studying the book as to what kind of score he or she is likely to get it if he or she is to take the text at that point. What is more disappointing is this seems be the ONLY guide available for the Michigan Test. You ESL educators out there, what's going on?How to Prepare for the Michigan Test Battery OverviewHere's a complete guide to one of the most widely used tests of English for speakers of other languages--required for admission and placement by hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities. Even if you're taking the TOEFL, you may still be required to take the Michigan Test Battery before beginning college work in the United States. Massachusetts MTEL English (07) (REA) (Test Preps) ReviewSo I read the reviews for the other MTEL prep books on here, and because they were so bad I decided I'd take a chance and use this book because there were no reviews (I figured no news was good news-- man, was I wrong). Well, I don't want anyone else to make that mistake. First, the book was awful on some very basic levels:
-incorrect answers on answer key
-some multiple choice read A, B, D, C so you didn't know which letter was which
-spelling errors all over the place
-some incorrect questions: "which of the following was NOT writing in the Harlem Renaissance?" and then ALL FOUR choices are writers who the book says wrote during the Harlem Renaissance.
-Table of Contents and Index page numbers were consistently incorrect.
-Humorously, the book talks about appropriate revision and editing, and yet I HIGHLY doubt this book was never revised or edited.
So now that I've hopefully convinced you that this book was a HUGE waste of money, let me show you how it was also a waste of valuable study time:
-the question/answer format was TOTALLY unlike the MTEL English exam I just took (for example, the real exam didn't have ONE question that said "which of the following author/work pairs is incorrect?" even though tons of the book questions had that.
-I am an English major with a 3.8 gpa and I scored a 37/100 on the 1st practice exam in this book, and 44/100 on the second. Yet I just took the test yesterday and am almost certain i aced it, since it was so much easier and more comprehensible than the book.
If I wrote this piece of junk I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. If you are taking the test, the best thing you can do is take out a book on Literary Forms (denoument, paradox, alliteration, those terms of style too) and check out the Test Objectives on the MTEL site (they give you a list of good authors to look at, and they really stuck to that list).
This book will give you a HUGE amount of information about TONS of writers you never needed to know about, like the Edo period in Japan, contemporary Chinese writers, etc. The test was easy, at least for me, and I wasted hours of my life studying like crazy because this book made the test seem literally impossible.

CliffsTestPrep CSET: English ReviewI just received this book and also have the XAM CSET: English study guide. Because the Cliff's Notes one just came out, I used the XAM book to study for the first three parts of the CSET (which I took and passed!). I now am going to take the fourth subtest.
In comparing the two books, I found that the XAM guide provides a LOT more information to study regarding the content. For example, the Cliff's version has two pages (essentially just a list) of major works of literature and the periods in which they were written. The XAM guide lists many of these same works, but also will provide a short synopsis of what the story is about. It also explains features of the different periods. The Cliff's version says that Dryden wrote during the Neoclassic period, but doesn't say what Neoclassism is or who Dryden was. The XAM guide does describe what Neoclassism means and when it was. It also tells you more information about Dryden.
In the Cliff's guide, out of 234 pages, only 23 cover content. 27 pages are on test-taking strategies. The remainder is two practice tests.
The practice tests are very good and, I think, very representative of what the actual tests are like. The answers to the questions are very well-written and are full of useful information. To continue using Neoclassism as an example, an answer to one question defines the period very nicely. If you have the patience and the organizational skills to dig through the answers to weed out the bits of useful information, then I think the practice tests will help you very much. But I prefer to have the information all in one place to begin with, and then use the answers to fill in what's missing. (The XAM version also had a very good answer key.)
The Cliff's version explicitly says that it is not meant to be a complete resource and the XAM version is not complete either. (I needed to supplement my studies with additional information from internet sources.) But I feel that, in terms of content and ease of study, the XAM study guide is a better source. I would probably buy both, however, use the XAM as a base for studying, and take the practice tests in both books because they ask for different skills (especially for subtest IV).CliffsTestPrep CSET: English OverviewYour complete guide to a higher score on the CSET: EnglishWhy CliffsTestPrep Guides?
