Scottish Gaelic in Twelve Weeks * includes 3 Audio CDs (Scots Gaelic Edition) ReviewI was excited to receive this title, but upon inspection I was soon slightly disappointed. Overall, the book should be considerd a great introduction to this nice language. Where is lacks is in the topic of pronunciation. The author did a fine job of phoneticizing the unit vocabularies, but it falls short of further pronunciation detail with regard to word inflection. Gaelic morphology and spelling is complicated, and simply knowing the pronunciation of a word in isolation doesn't necessarily give you a clue as to its pronunciation with morphological changes (e.g., suffixes, prefixes, infixes). However, to be fair, this seems to be the case with most other Irish, Scottish, and Manx texts and dictionaries. The only Gaelic (Irish) text that does a good job with this is Learning Irish. This title comes with CDs that not only cover the dialogs and text from the lessons, but also covers details of spelling and pronunciation (very prescriptive).I would recommmend that author consider a revision to this book to include the above mentioned points and also audio material for the lessons (all sections therein). Each lesson in the book contains some essential points of grammar explained and illustrated, exercises, a list of new vocabulary (with a guide to pronunciation, in International Phonetics notation), and an item of conversation.
