A Picture's Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism (Topics in Autism) ReviewIt is truly frustrating when your child who should speak - can't speak. Just because they cannot speak - does not mean they DON'T understand. They do understand. It is just that they way of showing you they understand is not available to them yet.
This is a great book for helping you get introduced to PECS (Picture Exchange System) and scheduling. This book helped me get started on giving my autistic son WORDS he could not express.
With this book buy an inexpensive digital camera, plastic laminate and an inexpensive color printer because PECS will change your childs life. This book will help you get started.
We started PECS with Jeff just under three years of age. After 2 weeks he was making requests with single pictures and NO LONGER TANTRUMING BECAUSE HE WAS FRUSTRATED! HE COULD COMMUNICATE. Fast forward to age five and Jeff can read over 500 words, write sentences because he used PECS. PECS changed my son's life and made the beginning process of communication before speech possible.
(Happy ending, Jeff now speaks!)
Start here..A Picture's Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism (Topics in Autism) OverviewMost young children with autism have significant delays in acquiring communication skills, a hallmark characteristic of autism. But with intensive early intervention and Applied Behaviour Analysis techniques, children can be taught how to communicate successfully, even before they acquire the ability to use speech. This book examines the value of non-verbal communication strategies for children with autism, and presents the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) in detail. PECS is a communication system that allows a child to use a picture (or series of pictures) to express his needs and desires without a prompt or cue from another person. The authors co-developed PECS during many years of experience working with children with autism, and now share their expertise in this easy-to-understand guide for parents.

The Illustrated Guide to Assistive Technology and Devices: Tools and Gadgets for Living Independently ReviewNearly everyone will find themselves disabled, at least to some extent, at some point in their lives. For example, I've been on crutches after an injury, and I've see advancing age limit people's activities in different ways. Technology can do a lot to widen the range of choices despite disabilities, or even to restore those abilities. Using myself as an example again, I would be legally blind in one eye, if not for the technology that made lens implants possible.
Robitaille, herself a beneficiary of a cochlear implant, uses this book to describe many of the products and services available to the disabled. A complete listing would be impossible, or at least obsolete by the time it was finished. Instead, Robitaille draws samples from a wide range, describing their applicability, drawbacks, and cost.
The first chapter addresses aids for visual impairments. These come in many forms, a startling number of which rely on computer technology. The next chapter covers aids for hearing impairments, like Robitaille's own caused by a childhood illness. Although Robitaille mentions a number of ways to help the hearing impaired in a sound-filled society, she also touches on the sensitive subject of deaf culture. Physical and cognitive disabilities have their own chapters, as well. We have more disabled veterans than ever returning to civilian life, ironically because personal armor and battlefield medicine now save so many who would otherwise have died. Wartime injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, represent only a few of the many kind of physical and mental challenges that people face, however, and each challenge needs a solution of its own. Communication disabilities get a chapter of their own, as well.
Robitaille's final chapters cover legislative, legal, and even financial support for assistive technologies. (Early on, she notes that "[Disability] has an impact on ... financial health and well-being." Assistive technologies are often expensive.)
This whirlwind tour of assistive technologies and services does little more than mention the ones that Robitaille has chosen as examples. Still, it's an eye-opening collection, and one likely to help educators, human resources managers, parents and families of the disabled, and anyone to whom "can do, done differently" becomes an important issue.

These include mobility devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and mobile vans; as well as hardware, software, and peripherals; talking ATMs; and strobe light alarm systems. Featuring 100 black-and-white photographs, the book includes real-life examples of how people with disabilities are successful utilizing AT, and it presents strategies for dealing with the emotional issues related to AT/AD.

Language Function: An Introduction to Pragmatic Assessment and Intervention for Higher Order Thinking and Better Literacy ReviewLanguage Function is a great resource for teachers and parents who are interested in understanding the learning process--or finding out what happens in the brain as people become literate. Arwood weaves her Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory throughout the book and provides numerous examples and case studies to assist the reader in gaining a thorough understanding of the learning process, which can be applied to practice both at home or in the classroom.
As a parent, Arwood's work helped me understand the way my son learns and has enabled me to provide the input and strategies he needs as a learner to continue to increase his language function for both academic and social learning.
As an elementary school teacher in a regular education classroom, I appreciate they way Arwood describes how her theory supports all students, including English language learners and students who have Attention Deficit Disorder. Language Function also includes two chapters that provide numerous examples of how both a primary teacher and a middle elementary teacher have successfully applied the theory in their regular education classrooms.
Finally, I think one of the most important contributions Language Function makes in the area of education is the idea that we, as educators, need to look at individual learners and focus on what they can do rather than on their deficits. With an understanding of the neurobiological process of acquiring concepts provided in Language Function, we can provide instruction that matches with the way our children and students learn best.
Language Function provides a wealth of information all parents and teachers should know. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with education or interested helping children learn and feel successful as learners.
Language Function: An Introduction to Pragmatic Assessment and Intervention for Higher Order Thinking and Better Literacy OverviewLiteracy teaching tends to take a structural approach to language, focusing on concepts such as sounds, morphemes, words, sentences, and vocabulary. However, new research suggests that the majority of English speakers actually think and learn in visual terms, and that there is a cultural and linguistic mismatch between language teaching and language learning. This has important implications for educators of students with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism. In her new book, Dr. Ellyn Arwood outlines a revolutionary new four-tiered model of how a learner acquires language, and suggests ways to impose visual language functions onto language in order to assist both neurotypical learners and those with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. Dr. Arwood provides tried-and-tested intervention strategies that can be used with such individuals at all levels, as well as tools for working effectively with those who think in terms of a visual, spatial, contextual kind of language. This book takes a fresh look at how language and literacy interact, and will be of interest to educators and special educators, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other professionals who support language learning and development.

Communication Issues In Autism And Asperger Syndrome: Do We Speak The Same Language ReviewAnother great book by Olga Bogdashina. My only warning is that you could find it a bit heavy going, but only because it is fantastically comprehensive. This is not just a book about communication issues in Autism... it is a book about language, learning, intelligence, and culture. It is open minded and thoughtful throughout, repeatedly emphasising the two way nature of communication and not just focusing on how to make autistic people do all the work like so many books do. The book is in three parts, the first looking mainly at theories of language and intelligence, the second at language characteristics, learning styles and development in autism, and the third and final part examines strategies to enhance communication. This is not a handbook that can teach someone how to communicate better, but what it is is a thorough guide to understanding what the communication issues of autistic people are.Communication Issues In Autism And Asperger Syndrome: Do We Speak The Same Language OverviewProviding a theoretical foundation for understanding communication and language impairments specific to autism, Olga Bogdashina explores the effects of different perceptual and cognitive styles on the communication and language development of autistic children. She stresses the importance of identifying each autistic individual's nonverbal language - which can be visual, tactile, kinaesthetic, auditory, olfactory or gustatory - with a view to establish a shared means of verbal communication. She offers an explanation of why certain approaches, for example PECS, might work with some autistic children but not others. Offering real insights, the 'What They Say' sections enable the reader to see through the eyes of autistic individuals and to understand their language differences first hand.
