Great Speeches by Native Americans (Dover Thrift Editions) ReviewI can't recommend this book highly enough. Aside from being full of speeches and insights that belong in the Classics section of any decent library, the strong and concise way in which these speakers convey the greatness of Native American thought and culture is unlike anything you will ever get from your favorite writer of history books, or contemporary decendant of these great people.
I will even go so far as to say that if you are moved by the great words of Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr. it would be a horrible oversight not to have read this volume.
Additionally, the book includes several short bits of historical background which are remarkable in themselves.
Great words, great thought, unlike Western or Eastern thought or any philosophy you have ever read. You can only wish these cultures had survived the holocost that was inflicted on them better so that we could have benefited to a greater degree than was done by taking their gold, land, and lives.
Credit must be also given to the Dover Thrift Edition series for not only making well known classics affordable and accessible to the average reader, but publishing such books as this which are lesser known yet of great importance to the reading and thinking public.
BOTTOM LINE: Please read this book. It's that important.Great Speeches by Native Americans (Dover Thrift Editions) OverviewRemarkable for their eloquence and depth of feeling, these 82 speeches encompass 5 centuries of Indian encounters with nonindigenous peoples. Speakers include Chief Joseph, Sitting Bull, Tecumseh, Seattle, Geronimo, Crazy Horse, and many lesser-known leaders, whose compelling words are graced by forceful metaphors and vivid imagery.

The Way We Live Now ReviewI consider it to be a tragedy that Anthony Trollope's works are largely forgotten and overlooked by the reading public. So many well-educated people have never even heard ot him, although his novels are some of the best representatives of what a good novel should be! His beautiful storytelling in "The Way We Live Now" is just another example of Trollope at his best. A master raconteur, his vivid descriptions and cutting satire make this work one of his most controversial (at least at the time) and indeed one of his most respected. Though his longest work, it certainly does not seem long because he keeps the reader on his toes, so much so, that he is dying to know what will happen next. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is the fact that it is difficult to find a character whom you can like. Each one, and there are many, has one or more particular faults, and we, as the readers, quickly realize that no one is perfect. Even the sympathetic characters are prejudiced at times. This, I believe, is a marked contrast to Dickensian personnages who much of the time are almost too angelic or cruel to be believable. Trollope give us a lesson in true human nature, one that will be very hard for me to forget. The Way We Live Now Overview

Early Reading Instruction: What Science Really Tells Us about How to Teach Reading (Bradford Books) ReviewIn this book McGuinness reviews reading research under the headings set out by the National Reading Panel. She makes a compelling argument for the kind of reading instruction known as synthetic, or linguistic phonics. The range of knowledge displayed is formidable.Early Reading Instruction: What Science Really Tells Us about How to Teach Reading (Bradford Books) OverviewEarly Reading Instruction is a comprehensive analysis of the researchevidence from early writing systems to computer models of reading. In this book,Diane McGuinness provides an innovative solution to the "reading war"--thecentury-old debate over the efficacy of phonics (sound-based) versus whole-word(meaning- based) methods. She has developed a prototype--a set of elements that arecritical to the success of a reading method.McGuinness shows that all writingsystems, without exception, are based on a sound unit in the language. This fact, and other findings by paleographers, provides a platform for the prototype. Otherelements of the prototype are based on modern research. For example, observationalstudies in the classroom show that time spent on three activities strongly predictsreading success: learning phoneme/symbol correspondences, practice at blending andsegmenting phonemes in words, and copying/writing words, phrases, and sentences. Most so-called literacy activities have no effect, and some, like sight wordmemorization, have a strongly negative effect. The National Reading Panel (2000)summarized the research on reading methods after screening out thousands of studiesthat failed to meet minimum scientific standards. In an in-depth analysis of thisevidence, McGuinness shows that the most successful methods (children reading a yearor more above age norms) include all the elements in the prototype. Finally, sheargues, because phonics-type methods are consistently shown to be superior towhole-word methods in studies dating back to the 1960s, it makes no sense tocontinue this line of research. The most urgent question for future research is howto get the most effective phonics programs into the classroom.

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English ReviewThis is not a "junior dictionary." This dictionary is a 100% up-to-date state of the art dictionary with a comprehensive listing of any word you might encounter as well as a key for how to use it in a sentence. With that key, students can figure out how to use the word properly in speech and composition. The dictionary itself is a learning tool because the definitions of the 60,000+ words included are limited to a 2000-word vocabulary, giving the student practice while learning new words. Additionally, the dictionary has many illustrations and diagrams which list thematic vocabulary (for example everything that is under the hood of a car or everything that is in a fully-equipped kitchen). The definitions are clear and precise: look at the definition for the word "piece." In that definition you will find a flow-chart with questions like, "Is it solid?" "Is it thin?" and so on, leading the learner to words like "drop, dash, squirt, wisp, chunk, slice, slab, segment, grain, speck...." My reading students, whose first language is English, love this book also, because the defining vocabulary is within their range. It is comprehensive enough that even teachers will find definitions of unfamiliar words (for example, I just learned that "chock" is a block of wood used to wedge under a tire). This book is the best investment a student can make. It is also an investment that every teacher should make in service to his/her studentsLongman Dictionary of Contemporary English OverviewBased on the 100-million word British National Corpus and the Longman Corpus Network, this dictionary explores a vivid and exciting area of English - spoken English. It also pinpoints the language patterns and grammar unique to spoken English. The 2000-word Longman Defining Vocabulary is made up of words students already know, and the dictionary's definitions have been written using this familiar set of core words.

Is That a Fish in Your Ear: Translation and the Meaning of Everything ReviewI am writing this in English, just because of a lot of incalculable contingencies that made English the language I grew up with. There have been thousands of languages, and of the current ones, there are plenty that have literature or consumer goods that I might be interested in. I'm bad at languages anyway, but unless I were a language genius, it would be folly to expect me to know all those languages well enough to, say, enjoy a novel in each. So I rely on translators. All of us rely on translators, not just for novels but for instructions on how to put that bookshelf together, or how our governments will relate to other governments. And everybody knows that things are lost in translation, that a literal translation is the most faithful, that the translator is inherently a traitor, and plenty of other commonplaces about translation, which are commonplaces because translation is so very important to us. David Bellos is eager to remove such clichéd thinking about translations and translators. He directs the Program in Translation and Intercultural Communication at Princeton University, and he is a professor of French, and he has done many literary translations himself. His book _Is That a Fish In Your Ear? Translation and the Meaning of Everything_ (Faber and Faber, Inc.) is a series of essays about his work and the world of languages, and what translation is and is not. It is obvious that Bellos has had a lot of intelligent fun writing about his work and that of other translators in specialties most of us never think about. He takes particular enjoyment in killing clichés about translation, and his book is a witty tour of the way humans get around the eternal language problem.
So, is anything lost in translation? Bellos dislikes the idea. There are good translations and bad ones, but it will not do for anyone to say something is lost in translation unless that person is an expert in the language of the original and of the translation, and unless the person can specify what it is that is lost. Here's another of Bellos's targets: Eskimos have a hundred words for snow. "The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax," writes Bellos, "was demolished many years ago, but its place in popular wisdom about language and translation remains untouched." Bellos points out that those who repeat the Eskimo story are participating in a particular 19th-century colonialist view of linguists, merchants, and philosophers that English and French and the other "sophisticated" languages of conquerors are the more advanced languages. Sure, says the argument, Eskimos have a hundred words for the concrete item "snow," and another tribe will have a hundred specific words for particular birds, or particular trees, but no general term for "snow," "bird," or "tree." The argument was that only advanced languages have such a capacity for abstraction, and it has been thoroughly debunked. Being able to abstract to a larger group is no big deal, and might be a source of confusion; try, Bellos says, going into a Starbucks and saying, "I'd like a coffee, please." Here's another target, and you have surely heard it before: "A translation is no substitute for the original." You might have uttered the phrase yourself, and been credited with a degree of profundity from your auditors. I had not thought about this one carefully before, but it is so patently untrue I am surprised anyone can spout it. Translations are substitutes for the original. D'oh! That's the whole point! There is a chapter here on simultaneous translation, one of the most exhausting things you can make your brain do. Translating comic books is an art form to itself. The cartoons are not re-drawn for the new language, so every bit of dialogue has to fit inside its original balloon, and the translator has little freedom (as opposed to the translator of a short story) to move any meaning to a different part of the page. "If you thought translating Proust might be difficult," says Bellos, "just try Astérix." In a chapter on machine translation, Bellos quite rightly says that a big reason computers cannot translate well is that while we can imbue in them plenty of words and word relationships, "nobody has figured out how to get a computer to know what a sentence is _about_." But surprisingly, he has praise for the outputs of Google Translate, which does translations in a new way. GT figures that a sentence for translation is probably a sentence that has been used before, and translated before, so it looks for that sort of match. Bellos reminds us, however, that this is a clever computer-engineering solution that is based on _human_ translations. There is much here, also, about the obstacles translators must confront, such as what to do when a character in a novel speaks substandard or low-class diction. "Translators shy away from giving the uncouth truly uncouth forms of language in the target text." The reason? Translators don't want readers to think that the uncouth language is the translator's fault. And here you will learn why Swedish detectives have adverbs after a verb to explain how they say things ("It doesn't matter," he said calmly." It's an imprint from English translations, and is a hallmark of Swedish detective fiction, not showing up so frequently in other Swedish works.
Bellos's sharp, amiable, and wide-ranging book isn't just about translation, it's about language and meaning and even what it is to be human. It is very literate, and light or provocative by turns. Anyone who uses language uses translations, and anyone who uses translations will learn plenty here.
Is That a Fish in Your Ear: Translation and the Meaning of Everything OverviewFunny and surprising on every page, Is That a Fish in Your Ear? offers readers new insight into the mystery of how we come to know what someone else means—whether we wish to understand Astérix cartoons or a foreign head of state. Using translation as his lens, David Bellos shows how much we can learn about ourselves by exploring the ways we use translation, from the historical roots of written language to the stylistic choices of Ingmar Bergman, from the United Nations General Assembly to the significance of James Cameron's Avatar. Is That a Fish in Your Ear? ranges across human experience to describe why translation sits deep within us all, and why we need it in so many situations, from the spread of religion to our appreciation of literature; indeed, Bellos claims that all writers are by definition translators. Written with joie de vivre, reveling both in misunderstanding and communication, littered with wonderful asides, it promises any reader new eyes through which to understand the world.

My Lady Gisborne: A Love Story ReviewWhen I heard there was a sequel to Charlotte Hawkins book "The Tempest," I jumped at the chance to read it. THAT story was hot and spicy. It was all about the passionate physical relationship between the two main characters, which is what I like in my romance novels. This new story has a much softer tone to it, but I still enjoyed it.
In "My Lady Gisborne," the love scenes are few, but there was plenty of sexual tension and loads of romance. It's a sweet story, and what makes it great are the characters. There are a lot of names to remember, but I didn't get lost because the author gives each character a unique personality, and they all play off of each other perfectly. There is a lot of humor and conflict exchanged, and it's wonderful.
The heroine, Evelyn, is the typical "Good girl." Some readers might accuse her of being a Mary-Sue type, but I liked her. She's only fifteen, which might seem a little shocking to some. But this is a story set in the 13th century, so it's right for the time. Evelyn is betrothed, like other women of her time. Her intended is a Marquis named Simon, and I have to say, it took me a while to warm up to him. He's a soldier, and good-looking of course. (What kind of hero isn't good-loooking, right?) But he's kind of cold at the start. His life is the knighthood. That's what he does. A warrior can't be all smiles and hugs, right? But of course, there's another side to him...
Enter...Rene, the third part of the love triangle. Rene was by far my favorite character. I love a rogue, especially one as delightful as Rene Jean-Bastien. He's naughty, he's charming, he's clever. Sometimes, I wanted to slap him silly. But I couldn't help but adore him, despite his sometimes bad behavior. I won't give anything away, but I'll just note that not every rogue can be entirely reformed.
I gave this story 4 stars out of 5 because I was hoping for more details about certain characters, but that's a minor quibble. This was a charming and lovely story. Two days well spent.
My Lady Gisborne: A Love Story OverviewLady Evelyn Gisborne desires to be a proper young noble-woman, but independence runs strong in her blood. She follows her heart as well as her head, and temptation soon beckons her in the form of a handsome rogue.René Jean-Bastien is clever, bold...and forbidden, for she has been promised to another.Simon Jean Carré, Marquis of Laroque,is a born soldier. His life is commited to the pursuit of battle and the honor of the knight's code. When he journies to the Gisborne estate, his only intention is to meet his promised bride. But he soon finds himself entwined in the life of a most unusual family...and falling in love with the woman he has sworn to keep at a distance.Evelyn is torn between two loves. Will she choose the man to whom she is promised...or the dashing thief who has stolen her heart?

Pop Odyssey ReviewThis is a different download. I haven't seen anything else like this on the Kindle.
Shopper: How is it different?
Me: For starters, everything is in a screenplay format.
Shopper: You mean, like a Shakespeare play?
Me: Locations and character are described in overwhelming detail, much like a Hollywood screenplay.
Shopper: Overwhelming detail?
Me: Each character gets a full page treatment of details as seen in an RPG video game.
Most of the characters have superpowers of some sort. A series of character summaries can go on for 10 pages between pieces of dialog. Makes for very choppy reading.
This is the dialog for a comic book movie, or maybe a comic book, or maybe a game.
"The hippo's chains and muzzle releases. It buckles and shifts as it peers down with anger. A burst of flames erupts from Kairo's arms and shoot around the left side of the colossal beast. Raiden's lightning technique flanks from the hippo's right side. The trail of fire and lightning collide behind the beast..."
I do think the layout is gorgeous. This is the best page to page layout I've seen on the Kindle. The author knows something about design. However, it would have been better to have all the characters in one section (with 1 page per character instead of 2), and the main story in a separate section. With this shuffling, it would be such a gorgeous layout that I would keep it on my Kindle and brave through the whole story, just because the presentation is so intensely unique.
I stopped at the 25% mark.Pop Odyssey OverviewThis is a tale of Us vs Them.US: Evokers. Sealers. Infusers. Mechanical Engineers. Artificers.THEM: Robots. Monsters. Infected. Zombies. Aliens? Yeah, "aliens."The result: A throwdown of EPIC proportions.

Let's Speak Business English: A Guidebook for the Non-Native Speaker of English ReviewI am an ESL teacher who bought this book for use in private lessons with a businessman who was in the USA temporarily. I was particularly attracted to the line on the front cover that says, "Enclosed cassettes let you hear business English as it is spoken in true-to-life situations." I consider that statement to be a flat-out lie. The cassette tapes have the most unnatural, scripted "conversations" that even my student recognized as being unnatural. As a way to be able to prepare oneself for business settings, the tapes are worth next to nothing.
I have given this book a generous rating of two stars because it does have some value for someone who can read well (the book has a lot of reading) and wants to familiarize themselves with some business terms in English, if all they've had is academic or regular classroom English.
This is designed as a self-learning book, so it doesn't work well in a tutoring or classroom situation. Unfortunately, business books that don't focus on business writing are scarce in ESL, so there isn't much to choose from, thus some English learners may find some value in this.Let's Speak Business English: A Guidebook for the Non-Native Speaker of English OverviewHere's a great guide to American business language and practices for business people who speak English as a second language. It covers all major areas of business survival. Practical language for telephone protocol, sales, business meetings, travel, and social etiquette are discussed.

Introducing English Grammar ReviewThis book is a pleasant change from all of the linguistics books out there that you need the help of a dictionary to understand.

If you want to get a good grap of English grammar, I highly recommend this book.Introducing English Grammar OverviewAnswering key questions such as "Why study grammar?" and "What is standard English?" Introducing English Grammar guides readers through the practical analysis of the syntax of English sentences. With all special terms carefully explained as they are introduced, the book is written for readers with no previous experience of grammatical analysis. It is ideal for all those beginning their study of linguistics, English Language, or speech pathology, as well as students with primarily literary interests who need to cover the basics of linguistic analysis. The approach taken is in line with current research in grammar, a particular advantage for students who may go on to study syntax in more depth. All the examples and exercies use real language taken from newspaper articles, non-standard dialects and include excerpts from studies of patients with language difficulties. Students are encouraged to think about the terminology as a tool kit for studying language and to test what can and cannot be described using these tools. This new edition has been fully revised in line with recent research. There is a new chapter on world English, a new glossaryand a free website with extensive further reading.

A Biography of the English Language ReviewFor anyone interested in historical linguistics, Millward's textbook is the first you should read. Her dry sense of humor livens even the most dense chapters on inner history and spelling reform. The book is intended to serve as a text for a graduate course on the history of English, and it is useful for both experienced linguists as well as those who have no prior coursework in linguistics. The text begins with chapters on language, phonology, and writing to provide the novice with background on linguistics, phonology, and phonemic transcription. The chapters that follow on Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Present Day English have dense, but easy to read, overviews of both inner and outer history of the language. Millward intersperses humorous vignettes with her main text and heightens the reader's appreciation for the languageA Biography of the English Language OverviewThe third edition of A BIOGRAPHY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE continues to examine the structure of English, from its Indo-European pre-history, through the invasions that shaped Old and Middle English, through its speakers' conscious efforts to police it in the Early Modern period, through its present-day transformations manifest in urban slang and text-messaging. The textbook explores three important issues: how languages and language change are systematic; how the inner history of a language is profoundly affected by its outer history of political and culural events; and how the English of the past has everywhere left its traces on present-day English. By uncovering the language's past, one can better use it to communicate as well as speculate about its future use in ever-changing globalized media.

The Least You Should Know About English: Writing Skills, Form B ReviewI love this series -- it's straightforward and easy to teach in portions rather than having to go sequentially through the book as you do with other workbooks. However, I was ding-dong enough to buy all three forms -- A, B, and C. If you read the footnotes at the beginning of B and C, you'll note the instructions/content/topics are the same in all three Forms -- the only thing that changes are the exercises. For my purposes in a high school English classroom, only one Form would have been fine since I could have created my own additional exercises as needed.
The information covers basic parts of speech through essay writing and includes remedial through advanced types of exercises and topics. I particularly like the possessives and contractions as well as the doubling-before-suffix lessons. I can't say the information is rare, but it's nice to have it all in one handy reference that's genuinely full of practical instruction and lacks unnecessary narrative. The Least You Should Know About English: Writing Skills, Form B OverviewQuickly master English writing skills with THE LEAST YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ENGLISH: WRITING SKILLS, FORM B, Tenth Edition. Brief and uncomplicated, this text has helped students learn the basics of English writing for thirty years with its clear, concise concept explanations and useful, relevant corresponding exercises. Topics include spelling, word choice, sentence structure, and punctuation as well as more advanced topics such as the writing process, argumentation, and summarizing skills. The English is Coming: How One Language is Sweeping the World ReviewIt's an exciting time for the English language. All over the world, people are learning English and using it as a lingua franca, a common language. Everyone has an opinion on the merits and the detriments of a single language gaining so much influence - it makes communication easier if more people speak a common language, but at what price? Are other languages being shoved out of existence by this language gorilla?
Meanwhile, while people debate the influence English is having on the world, what influence is the world having on English? It's apparent that the English people are speaking in Singapore, for instance, is not the English people are speaking in Texas or in Zimbabwe. And English, or Englishes, aren't sitting still - they're mutating and morphing at a furious pace. What's happening?
Several recent books attempt to answer these questions and figure out where English is going. The English is Coming is one of the more entertaining ones I've seen lately. Leslie Dunton-Downer initially takes a traditional route by looking at the history of English as a language and as a lingua franca. (You can't tell where you're going until you know where you've been.) She does this in an easy manner, free of academic jargon. I imagine that middle schoolers and older would find it easy to follow.
Dunton-Downer's book is not only conversational in tone, but it appeals to those of us with short attention spans. It jumps from topic to topic smoothly, and breaks things up every so often with the story of a word that has transcended English and gone international, such as taxi and shampoo. Some of the stories are familiar - okay and bikini, for instance. Others choices are debatable, such as cookie and safari. But they are all interesting.
The English is Coming stands in contrast to the recent Globish: How the English Language Became the World's Language by Robert McCrum. McCrum was one of the writers of the excellent PBS series of several decades ago, The Story of English. In Globish, he loses a lot of his credibility by making outrageous claims that English is, by its nature, conducive to democracy and other fine qualities. Globish is rubbish. The English is Coming, on the other hand, is mostly even-handed about English, although Dunton-Downer makes the case that English is an excellent choice for a global language because it is inherently easy to learn. I wonder if that's true - it seems like a difficult language to learn, but as a native English speaker, I can't say.
Other recommended books on global English:
Empires of the Word: A Language History of the World by Nicholas Ostler
English as a Global Language by David CrystalThe English is Coming: How One Language is Sweeping the World OverviewEnglish has fast become the number one language for everything from business and science, diplomacy and education, entertainment and environmentalism to socializing and beyond—virtually any human activity unfolding on a global scale. Worldwide, nonnative speakers of English now outnumber natives three to one; and in China alone, more people use English than in the United States—a remarkable feat for a language that got its start as a mongrel tongue on an island fifteen hundred years ago. Through the fascinating stories of thirty English words used and understood in nearly all corners of the globe, The English Is Coming! takes readers on an eye-opening journey across culture and commerce, war and peace, and time and space. These mini-histories shed new light on everyday words: the strange turns of fate by which their meanings evolved and their new roles as the building blocks of the first language ever to forge a global community. Exploring such familiar terms as shampoo (from a Hindi word for scalp and body hygiene long practiced in India); robot (coined by Czech painter Josef Capek for his brother Karel's 1921 play about man-made creatures); credit (rooted in a prehistoric phrase of sacred significance: "to put heart into"); and dozens of others, Dunton-Downer reveals with clarity and humor how these linguistic artifacts embody the resilience, appeal, adoptability, and wild inclusiveness that English, through a series of historical accidents, gained on its road to worldwide reach. These words explain not only how English has managed to link our distant and often disparate pasts but also how it is propelling humankind to a future that we can, for the first time, talk about and shape in a language that now belongs to all of us: Global English. Perfect for culture buffs, armchair travelers, and language lovers alike, The English Is Coming! is sure to inspire truly global conversations for decades to come.
