English As She Is Spoke: The New Guide of the Conversation in Portuguese and English, in Two Parts (English and Portuguese Edition) ReviewThis is one of my very favorite books of all time. Carolino and Fonesca wrote this to cure the phrase book gap in the 1800s. It seems that there was no Portuguese-English phrase book available at the time and they decided to take on the task of writing one despite the fact that neither spoke English. Likewise, they only owned Portuguese-French and French-English dictionaries which results in some surreal 'translations.' ("Do you cut the hairs?"; "Comb me."; "For to craunch the marmoset.") You will also learn a bit of taxonomy. Previously I had not known that a Hedgehog was a type of fish, for instance.
I can't recommend this gem of a book highly enough. I have an edition with a forward by Mark Twain in addition to this expanded edition. Twain and I both find this book perfect and unable to be improved on.

English as She Is Spoke: Being a Comprehensive Phrasebook of the English Language, Written by Men to Whom English was Entirely Unknown (Collins Library) ReviewI know that it is not politically correct to make fun of foreigners who can't read or write English (unless they're from Texas), nor should we laugh at their resultant manglings.
But what about foreigners who deliberately set out to write an English guidebook for Portugese-speakers and get it all kinds of wrong. After all, they kind of ask for it, right?
Especially if those translators spoke NO English...
And did not have an English-Portugese dictionary...
Well, I think that's probably OK to laugh at. And laugh at it you will. The entries are so mangled they're almost poetry. I also enjoyed the fact that, since it is a 19th century book, it deals with those extremely odd arcane things, like bedwarmers and used horses.

Armed with Fonseca and Carolino's guide, a Portuguese traveler can insult a barber ("What news tell me? All hairs dresser are newsmonger"), complain about the orchestra ("It is a noise which to cleve the head"), go hunting ("let aim it! let make fire him"), and consult a handy selection of truly mystifying "Idiotisms and Proverbs."

You All Spoken Here (Brown Thrasher Books) ReviewI found this book about 10 years ago and have returned to browse through my dog-eared copy many times since. Wilder has a wonderful collection of sayings and lore here, and I never put down the book without thinking "I'm going to remember a couple more of those expressions and start using them." But be warned, the chapters and chapter titles seem to be mostly for decoration. They only loosely describe the rambling contents of each section. There is no index (at least in my edition), so relocating a particular express (now what was it he said about hot weather?) is a challenge. I almost always get distracted before I can find what I'm looking for. iWondering how to make points with your mother? "Don't talk back. Keep the woodbox filled. And don't stake the cow where she can get to wild onions." A sophisticated man "has been places and et in ho-tels." A dependable person "plows a straight furrow and goes to the end of the row."
You All Spoken Here is a marvelously funny piece of southern humor and a language lover's delight.
