Colloquial Chinese: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series) ReviewYou may be wondering why Routledge have two books on their catalogue with the same title? The earlier work (1982) is by two of the staff at London's University's SOAS. The newer, by Ken Qian, seeks a less academic approach and is clearly targetted more at the unaccompanied beginner. While the publisher's decision to issue an easier and more 'popular' textbook is understandable the old Tung and Pollard version is being kept in print due to its popularity as a university text and the fact that the Chinese character texts are available separately. If you want to really learn Chinese to the level of being able to read newspapers and novels one day then you'd be better off with Tung and Pollard.Colloquial Chinese: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series) OverviewThis new edition of the bestselling Colloquial Chinese has been revised and updated to make learning Chinese easier and more enjoyable than ever before.Specially written by an experienced teacher for self-study or class use, the course offers a step-by-step approach to modern spoken Mandarin Chinese. Hanzi and the Kangxi Radicals ReviewFirst off, this is really is something quite different. I was rather curious as I tried to get a first impression by flicking through its pages. One of the first thing that struck me was how clear the layout was as well as the size of the characters. There are whole pages dedicated to one radical in a rather bizzare way. The characters in turn are literally dismantalled piece by piece in a clear siccint manner using an inovative method using stroke types, stoke order, example characters and number of radical all in various sizes and clarity. The anecdotes are perhaps the funniest I have ever read and this in a book about Chinese radicals! I mean the name at the bottom of the cover is big hairy monkey! I havent fully mastered this system yet as I only got the book yesterday but I really do get the impression that the authour is empathetic with the reader - he dispells so many myths about learning Chinese and gives some excellent recommedations for web sites etc. Although I havent had the time yet to fully understand the system I am willing to bet that this really is a cut above the rest in a subject that is normally quite mundane if not too difficult to learn but extremely time consuming. Incidentally I did read some of the authors reviews and he is rather critical of other Chinese language books but he does justify his rational clearly and comprehensively and this gave me a good idea about the kind of book I have in my hands.Hanzi and the Kangxi Radicals OverviewHanzi and the Kangxi Radicals is the most comprehensive book available on learning the written Chinese language. At 566 full size pages it introduces all of the components necessary to study written Chinese. The written language is based on 214 core characters called Radicals. All the traditional and simplified Radicals are presented with common variants. While many books introduce 6 or 8 strokes, this book has over 55 strokes used in writing Chinese.A complete section on pronunciation compliments chapters on stroke order, Hanyu Pinyin and Tones. This book has over 400 practice pages introducing a new unique method to practice writting Chinese characters.

Starting Out in Chinese ReviewThis audio CD is the best I have found for learning the fundamentals of the Chinese language. Instead of teaching a lot of phrases that you simply memorize, which was difficult for me, you learn the basics of verbs, pronouns, possessives, etc. so you can form your own sentences when you don't know the exact phrase to use. It will be enough for you to be understood. This program left me feeling like the Chinese spoken language is actually much easier than English. You will learn that Chinese has no articles (the, an, a), that there are no verb tenses, all pronouns use the same form of the verb, there are no plurals, etc. You will be amazed at how words make sense. Words that are similar look similar. For instance, words about education have components in common. Once you understand this, it makes memorizing nouns and verbs much easier. If you listen to this CD over and over, I promise you will form a fantastic base to continue your Chinese language acquisition. People are amazed at how fast I have learned the language.Starting Out in Chinese OverviewAll the Mandarin Chinese you need to get started in a simple audio-only program!Starting Out in Chinese is a beginner-level program on 3 CDs, and it includes short and simple lessons and dialogues. It covers all the basics, with plenty of repetition and practice so it is ideal for audio-only learning. Starting Out in Chinese is perfect if you want to learn while commuting, running errands, or at the gym, as well as if you want to learn at home and simply prefer an all-audio course. If you want to refer to written material, you can go online to download the audioscript.

Mandarin Chinese At a Glance (At a Glance Series) ReviewHaving lived in China, this is the phrase book I recommend the most to friends and family that travel to the PRC. The main reason is that I found many new expats and visitors using guides that had the English word and the Pinyin pronunciation (the English version of the Mandarin word) -- but would fail to provide the Chinese Characters.

If you don't know the language, it will be very difficult to speak it, with any phrase book. What is going to help you the most is pointing to the characters -- whether you're pointing it to a cab driver, someone at a restaurant, on the train, in an internet cafe, etc, they will understand you. If you just try to speak the pinyin, and don't know the language, you will be SOL. If you're a vegetarian or have dietary restrictions (including kosher, etc), this book covers it. It's very comprehensive.
The size is great, fits in a purse or pocket; and the clear protective cover helps to protect it from the elements.
Mandarin Chinese At a Glance (At a Glance Series) OverviewThis attractive, illustrated Mandarin Chinese phrasebook for travelers has been updated and re-designed. Perfect as a take-along guide for visitors to the Far East, it features city maps, information on public transportation systems, general information for visitors to China, and bilingual lists of more than 1,500 most-often-used words and expressions for travelers, in the form of phonetic spellings of Mandarin words with their English translations. The book's page edges are color-coded by topic for quick reference.

Basic Spoken Chinese Practice Essentials: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners (Basic Chinese) ReviewI have purchased many Chinese courses only to find deficiencies and gaps in the scope, content, and depth in each. I have studied Chinese for 3 years and never felt comfortable in my knowledge, both in active vocabulary, its usage, and grammar. Assimil came close, but then I found this book. Even my wife, who is Chinese, has noticed a marked improvement in my skill. This book, along with the workbook, are a must have for any serious student of Chinese. Vocabulary, structure, grammar, and cultural context are all addressed extremely well. Each lesson contains a short dialog followed by an in-depth analysis of each word, phrase, and sentence. Grammar is explained in great detail - no need for a supplemental grammar book. The workbook then drills each new construction in a way that is very effective and rewarding. You leave each lesson with a confidence you may never have had with another course. The worse of which, in my opinion, are the Teach Yourself and Colloquial series. Those contain very little substantive drills.
I highly recommend this course, and wish it had more visibility in the mainstream of language courses available. The authors did a fantastic job with this, and it sets a new standard for pedagogical materials for language students.Basic Spoken Chinese Practice Essentials: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners (Basic Chinese) OverviewUse this one-of-a-kind practice guide together with any Chinese book or language program, and dramatically enhance your speaking. No matter what book or course you're using to learn Chinese, it takes a lot of practice. Fundamental Spoken Chinese (Chinese Edition) ReviewThis is by far the best pedagogical text on the market. Most texts are centered around typical tourist-related topics and not the foundations of the language itself. The Teach Yourself or Colloquial series, for example, don't get into the level of detail that a true language student would like or require. I prefer texts that focus on the grammar and usage (the building blocks) of a language to one that focuses on how to buy a train ticket or order food at a restaurant. A study of both approaches is valuable, but a study solely the latter hinders linguistic progress and language skill. Anyone interested in learning the Chinese language thoroughly should consider this book. It also contains many exercises in each lesson to practice what is taught. By the time you "leave" a lesson, you feel confident you've understood it. The only drawback to this book is the lack of audio material. My Chinese wife has noticed a marked improvement in my speaking and sentence construction skills. 5 stars indeed!Fundamental Spoken Chinese (Chinese Edition) Overview

Basic Spoken Chinese: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners (Basic Chinese) ReviewI have been teaching Chinese to high school students for over 25 years and have used a variety of texts. I decided to try "Basic Spoken Chinese" (BSC) with one of my classes on an experimental level, and I have to say it is the best text of its kind that I have ever seen. In the first place, separating the speaking/listening components from the reading/writing components enables students to make rapid progress in oral/aural skills without the limitations imposed by time taken in character mastery. The language used is colloquial and authentic, arranged topically with each unit building upon the previous ones. The ancillary materials are both abundant and exceptional in quality, providing multiple venues for drill (listening comprehension, pronunciation, substitution, role playing, translation, etc.). The audio components (included on CDs that come with the text) are excellent. The companion volume, "Basic Written Chinese", will be available early next year, and I am anxious to see this and incorporate a writing component into the class. If it's as good as BSC, this textbook will set a new standard for Chinese instruction.
It should be noted that BSC and BWC are intended primarily to be used as college texts. However, this should NOT deter Chinese instructors at the secondary level from considering adopting them. In the final analysis, the difference simply comes down to pace. The lesson plans which accompany the text can easily be modified for high school classes, or the teacher can prepare his own lesson plans, as I do. The material is appropriate for any level provided that the instructor adjust the pace at which new material is introduced and the time devoted to any given unit.
Another impressive feature to BSC is the amount of relevant (and interesting!) culture information introduced in the "Grammar and Culture" segment of each part of the units. The explanations and insights far surpass anything I have seen in other texts, not excluding such classics as the "Integrated Chinese" series. If the teacher is so inclined, entire class periods can be devoted to discussions of these culture points. My students actually enjoy reading them. In a China (PRC) which is changing almost daily, the cultural insights offer marvelous opportunities to discuss Chinese culture in the context of the language being studied at the moment. The wealth of information offered in a very reader-friendly manner is breath-taking and makes the cultural component of the course fall into place naturally.
If I were to voice any complaint---and it is a very minor one---I could have wished that the video component were of better quality. While it does allow the instructor to choose what he wants his students to see (characters, pinyin, English, or nothing but the actual video), the voices are actually dubbed over the real voices of the speakers. Though I understand that this guarantees phonetic accuracy, it impinges upon the real-life feel of the video. However, this point pales to insignificance given the quality of the text as a whole and should under no circumstances be a deterrent to adopting this text.
BSC will work very well with independent learners, a point which Dr. Kubler addresses in the Instructor's Manual.
In short, I believe Dr. Kubler's text is truly ground-breaking, marking a new standard for spoken Chinese instruction. I am very anxious to see "Basic Written Chinese" when it appears. For those teachers (especially at the secondary level) who have lived with the frustration of students' oral proficiency progressing only as fast as they can master the written characters, BSC is a breath of fresh air even in a time where new Chinese texts appear almost daily. Most importantly, the students themselves are motivated by making rapid progress in the two most important skills of speaking and listening comprehension. It is my sincere hope that this text achieves the recognition (and adoption) which it deserves.Basic Spoken Chinese: An Introduction to Speaking and Listening for Beginners (Basic Chinese) OverviewYou don't need characters to speak Chinese! In fact, for English speakers, learning the characters is an inefficient process and slows down your progress in learning to speak and listen to Chinese. Instead, use separate but integrated "tracks" to help you efficiently master the basics of spoken and written Chinese. Basic Spoken Chinese, Vol. 1 provides success at a beginning level offluency.
Unlike many textbooks which are written by mainland Chinese authors, this book focuses on the challenges faced by *native English-speaking students* in learning Chinese.
Detailed explanations in English of Chinese pronunciation, grammar, usage, culture, society, and recommended learning approaches.
Included CD-ROM offers videos featuring over 100 native speakers in many diverse Chinese-speaking societies, from mainland China and Taiwan to Singapore and Malaysia. This software program allows the learner to view 40 on-location, native-speaker videos of the book's 40 core Chinese conversations, and interact with them in various ways: user can select/replay any specific portions of the videos; can choose to also view the conversation in pinyin, Simplified Chinese characters, or Traditional Chinese characters (appears beside the video as each spoken line occurs); or can choose to mute any Chinese or American speaker's audio, to practice speaking along with the video
Included Audio disc provides over 6 hours of native-speaker audio, including all of the book's conversations, build ups, new words, supplementary vocabulary, dialogues, and other key items.
