American Accent Training: Grammar with Audio CDs ReviewAs a college professor, I receive many review copies in the course of a semester. I was pleasantly surprised at AAT: Grammar. I have been using Ann Cook's accent book for years and have often wished there were a way to integrate her methodology with the grammar and writing needs of my students. I have started using this book with ESL students at levels ranging from true beginners to fairly advanced. My immediate feedback overall is positive. I was impressed by how comprehensive the initial testing is, including grammar, listening comprehension and a writing sample. The book starts out with an introduction to the most basic sentence type and moves through each of the tenses in a logical progression. I would say that Cook's major innovation is the Grammar Box on page xii, which ingeniously lets a student see all the tenses at one time, plus the various forms of each one. It's amazing, but at a glance, a student can see the active and passive voices, main verbs and the verb to be, the negative and question forms, the continuous, modal and causative. I have never seen the totality of grammar explained better than in this simple grid.
I appreciate the 80-hour curriculum provided in the book, so even a new instructor can allocate sufficient time to each topic, interweaving grammar and accent. It covers the eight parts of speech, intonation, word connections and pronunciation, using a combination of exercises and authentic materials. As an online educator, I was curious about what kind of support they offered online, and it seems to be a community-type site with a message board, chat and podcasts.
A couple of minor quibbles would be that some of the traditional verb terminology such as the perfect tense and the conditional have been renamed to the real and unreal duo. Being old school myself, I was at first taken aback, but I have come to embrace this because they are actually more descriptive than the traditional terms, particularly when supported by the icons in the grammar box. Adjective clauses have similarly been renamed reverse modifiers, which enables a student to see the relationship between a regular adjective (nice people) and a post-positional modifying clause (people who are nice).
Overall, however, I would recommend this to students and educators alike.American Accent Training: Grammar with Audio CDs OverviewThis book and audio compact disc program instructs students of English as a second language in the elements of grammar, presenting a grammar review that emphasizes speech and correct pronunciation. The compact discs include spoken dictations for each of the book's ten chapters. Students start by writing out what they hear, and then comparing what they have written with the book's printed version. In the process, they begin learning the elements of grammar, staring with the simple present tense of the verb "to be" and progressing to all other tenses and parts of speech. Students gradually learn how to use English words and pronounce them properly in grammatically correct sentences. Following each chapter's introductory sentence, they are given a brief story. A short test at the end of each chapter helps them determine their learning progress. The dictations start out quite simple and become progressively more difficult from one chapter to the next. The book is filled with charts and illustrations to facilitate students' learning progress.

Manual of American English Pronunciation ReviewI go an used copy of this book in the year 1988 when I was an English teacher for TOEFL in Taipei. As I taught "listening comprehension," which was the weakest area for Chinese students, I tried hard to finding as much relevant reference as possible. Unlike a lot of difficult/academic TESOL books, among the dozen reference books I got, Manual of American English Pronunciation proved to be the easiest to comprehend, most practical and most resourceful. This manual was organized in such a logical and easy-to-understand way that most English teachers and students alike would find it easy to absorb and put into daily use. As its title suggested, it should be used as a manual instead of a book.
The best part that helped me most was "Lesson 16, The Sandhi of Spoken English." In this chapter, the authors introduced the various forms of Sandhi-forms of English that were commonly seen, for example, reduction of unstressed function words, the disappearing of "t" and palatalization. I saw WOWs in most of my students' eyes when such knowledge was revealed to them. "No wonder I simply couldn't understand spoken English, " I guessed that was their feeling and I was glad to help them decode the mystery.
I got on Amazon to see if there's an updated version I can buy. I look forward to its fifth edition.Manual of American English Pronunciation OverviewDesigned for students of American English who want to improve their pronunciation and reduce their accents. Manual of American English Pronunciation presents an easy-to-follow, complete, and individualized guide. This package can be used with teacher guidance in ESL/EFL classes or as a self-study guide. Clifford H. Prator, Jr. and Betty Wallace Robinett, two world-famous linguists, have combined their considerable expertise and skill to design an Accent Inventory that comprehensively covers all aspects of American English Pronunciation. It is this Inventory that individualizes the text. The student begins this text by reading a diagnostic passage, and the teacher and student then diagnose the problem areas according to each student's result on the Accent Inventory. It is quite simple then to direct the student to those lessons in the Manual that address his or her particular problems. All pages of the Manual are perforated for easy access and further individualization. There is a second copy of the Accent Inventory after the final lesson that then measures the student's success.

American Accent Training (Book and Audio CD, 2nd Edition) ReviewI do agree with the other reviewers that it is an excellent book written by a professional with extensive experience. It comes with 6 CD and almost 200-page book with detailed explanations of intonation patterns and sounds. Additionally, in the appendix Ann Cook discusses in detail what are the typical accents of native speakers of common languages, and what specifically the native speakers of these languages should work on.
The chief difficulty with working with a course like this is that the learner should not only repeat after the speaker, but should also be able to hear his/her own words to make the necessary corrections. If you keep on repeating the same mistake, but do not hear it and cannot correct yourself - what's the point of practicing? My solution is to practice with a computer. I tried a simple sound recorder on a computer as well as a tape recorder, and it did not work - too complicated, invoves too much button pressing. You need a program which plays a phrase, then records you repeating it, then repeats the native speaker, then plays your recording, and does it all over again in a loop until you are satisfied. It turned out that it is not easy to find a program like this; after a long search, I found a shareware program called FollowMe, its trial version can be downloaded from tarsoft's site or shareware servers (perhaps there are other programs like this which I did not come across, I am talking about the learning concept here). For me personally working with a computer and using a program like described above made a tremendous difference, I really feel that I am getting the most from this book. I can hear my mistakes and I feel that I am correcting them.
While with a course like this the price is much less important than the result and productivity of learning, this book (in my opinion) satisfies both, good quality and reasonable price. Recommended.American Accent Training (Book and Audio CD, 2nd Edition) OverviewThe second edition of the highly acclaimed American Accent Training, now on 5 audio CDs, is for foreign-born students and business people working, traveling or studying in the United States and Canada. Through extensive intonation and pronunciation exercises, students learn how to speak with a standard American Accent. At the same time, listening comprehension improves dramatically. Supplementary materials included detailed nationality guides for eight languages (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Korean), access to a comprehensive website, and referral to a qualified telephone analyst for an individual diagnostic speech analysis. Also included are colored markers for written exercises, and a mirror to practice accurate pronunciation.

Speak Up(r): Spanish Accent Elimination Program: Learn to Speak Standard American English (Living Language Speakup Series) ReviewWell, I'd like to say that this is a good book for any Spanish-Speaking person who wants to improve his/her pronunciation. This book basically shows the reader the differences between the English and the Spanish sounds. The first part of the book covers consonant sounds that doesn't exist in the Spanish language; consonants such as "th," "v," "z." The second part has to do with vowel sounds, and it shows the reader how differenciate the sounds between words like: seat & sit, feel & fill, pool and pull, leave live, etc. Finally the last part of the book points out some techniques and recommendations to become more fluent in spoken english. Yo recomendaría éste libro para cualquiera que desee tener una idea mas clara de como los americanos producen los sonidos al hablar, pero de todas maneras creo yo que aparte de saber ésto, es necesaria la conversación continua con alguna person que sea fluente en inglés.Speak Up(r): Spanish Accent Elimination Program: Learn to Speak Standard American English (Living Language Speakup Series) OverviewAn audio/book course designed to help native and non-native speakers eliminate strong accents. Mastering the American Accent with Audio CDs ReviewFor the past few years, I've been searching and trying different books on how to speak standard American English to reduce my accent and ultimately increase my confidence at work and in life, but I've never found one book that really addresses my issues until I used this book.

Reading the book and listening to the CD make me feel that the author truly understands my issues and frustrations. The book demonstrates each pronunciation with practice words and sentences which are simple and easily understood. Those practice words and sentences showed me that I have been pronouncing words incorrectly but wouldn't have known this otherwise. Moreover, I can apply those examples immediately in my daily conversations.

The other merit of this book that I really like is that this book goes beyond the pronunciation. It also teaches you the rules of which word and syllable need to be stressed and which are not. I've been applying these rules. I feel that those rules have helped my intonation when I speak. I learned a lot about how Americans link words together. I use to pronounce thing word by word. This made my speech sound artificial. I love the exercises on linking. You cannot sound like a native speaker is you don't link words.

I also like the section of Native Language Guide section which lists common issues of different languages. I didn't know why Chinese accent is different from Russian's accent. It makes me feel that this book is customized to my needs.

I highly recommend this book. You will benefit it tremendously by following the book's instructions and applying to your daily life.
Mastering the American Accent with Audio CDs OverviewThis combination book and audio instructional program is designed to diminish the accents of men and women who speak English as their second language. It will help them speak standard American English with clarity, confidence, and accuracy. Specific exercises concentrate on vowel sounds, problematic consonants such as V, W, B, TH, and the American R, employ correct syllable stress, link words for smoother speech flow, use common word contractions such as won't instead of will not, and more. Additional topics that often confuse ESL students are also discussed and explained. They include distinguishing between casual and formal speech, homophones (for instance, they're and there), recognizing words with silent letters (comb, receipt, and others), and avoiding embarrassing pronunciation mistakes, such as mixing up party and potty. Students are familiarized with many irregular English spelling rules and exceptions, and are shown how such irregularities can contribute to pronunciation errors. A native language guide references problematic accent issues of 13 different language backgrounds. Correct lip and tongue positions for all sounds are discussed in detail. Enclosed with the book are four compact discs that use male and female voices to coach correct American-style pronunciation.
