Discussions that Work: Task-centred Fluency Practice (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI don't know just how old this book is, but it reminds me of the kinds of language activities that I did as a pupil in English as my first language when I was eleven or twelve. There are lots of cognitive and logical activities and a few balloon debates, which are fun if you like that kind of stuff. However, these activities may not necessarily be the best way to promote fluency in your EFL class simply because they are mentally too taxing. They require silent reflection, which is not what you would want in your oral English lessons. The book is divided into two parts; The first section discusses general principles, which is both lucid and informative. The second section, which is about three quarters of the book, gives practical examples. The best activities for me in my high school teaching situation, are the simple ones which have a real-life purpose, such as planning for a trip or doing a survey, and which are easy enough to get students talking straight away. Overall, this book does have quite a lot of useful and workable activities and I'm pleased that I can refer to it from time to time. If you are an EFL teacher looking for new ideas for facilitating discussion in your language classes, then most likely, you will not be disappointed with this book.Discussions that Work: Task-centred Fluency Practice (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewHow can you make a discussion really work? What sort of activities produce genuine and enthusiastic exchanges of ideas? How can you prepare such exercises quickly and easily? These are some of the questions that Discussions that Work sets out to answer. The first part provides some general guidelines on the organisation of successful task-centred activities. The second part consists of some fifty practical examples which have been tried and found effective in the classroom. They range from fairly simple to complex and sophisticated, and can thus be used with a wide range of learners, from elementary to the most advanced, in both secondary and adult education.

Pronunciation for Advanced Learners of English Student's book ReviewThe conversations sound realistic and unrehearsed. At first glance, the illustrative technique makes the illustrations look cluttered. But the system doesn't take long to learn and is easy to use.
From the introduction:
"It is emphasized that the speakers you will hear will be participants involved in some communicative event, that is to say, they will be saying something that they think is of interest or importance to someone else. They will not be providing model sentences or lists of words for you to imitate. And your own aim will be to take part as effectively as you can in similar events in which you have your own ideas to communicate. You will not be satisfied with simply demonstrating that you have mastered an awkward vowel sound or a difficult sequence of consonant sounds. If the course is to be useful, at your level of competence, the emphasis must necessarily be upon communicative use rather than upon demonstration.
It is for this last reason that the course differs in the way it is organized from most others that are concerned with pronunciation. It makes its first objective an increased awareness of how the intonation system of English is used. This can only be done if we assume that language is being used to communicate, for intonation is the means whereby we organize our language into patterns that fit the present communicative need.
Part 1 of the first unit is concerned, therefore, with how speech is presented by the speaker, not as separate words, but as tone units. Tone units are the building blocks out of which all spoken communication is constructed. Thereafter, work in intonation is introduced unit by unit alongside work on individual on individual 'sounds' (the vowel and consonant 'segments' of traditional pronunciation practice).
There is one very straightforward reason for doing this: in the speech of advanced learners, departures from what we regard as desirable are said to be more often matters of intonation than matters of how particular sounds are made. There is more to it than this, however. If we want to focus upon the individual 'sounds' of a language, and to do so usefully, we must take account of what happens to them when the language is used to communicate. This really means being aware of how such sounds are affected by the intonational shape of the stretch of speech they occur in. And this in turn means focusing on the tone units that we find in any sample of used language.
Intonation is not, on the whole, popular among language teachers or learners. By giving it so central a place in the course, we may seem to making things harder rather than easier. Intonation has a reputation for being difficult and 'slippery.' It is true that people tend easily to lose confidence in their ability to get to grips with it. The truth may well be, however, that this is precisely because it has not been given a very prominent place in most teaching procedures. Through being left out, it has acquired the kind of mystery that so often surrounds things that we think are beyond our understanding. And mystification about something so fundamental to spoken communication as intonation is clearly not a good thing! Being aware that there is a whole area of the language you know next to nothing about hardly makes for self-confidence. This is particularly true when your told - as you probably have been told at some time - that intonation is immensely important! And building self-confidence is central to the aims of this cour."
Also from the introduction: "The course is intended to be worked through one unit at a time and in the given order. This is because each unit provides information that you will need in later units.''Pronunciation for Advanced Learners of English Student's book OverviewThis material for advanced learners provides an accessible combination of pronunciation theory and practice. The Student's Book encourages learners to examine the sound system of English in the context of connected speech and describes how intonation works in practice.

Speak American: A Survival Guide to the Language and Culture of the U.S.A. ReviewI bought this book as a gift for an ESL student I am tutoring. My student had a lot of fun browsing though it.
The book is small, but packs a lot of information into its pages. And it's the perfect size for carrying around.
There's lots of detail in the information the author provides too, particularly cultural things. For example, the author goes extensively into how to order food at a restaurant and what is considered appropriate (eg sending food back if it's not to your liking). There's also lots of information about the US school system and other topics as well.
There are example phrases throughout that the English use but Americans don't. And the author even gives the reader grammar tips and explains why it doesn't sound right in American English. There's also a huge word list in the back of the book listing American/English equivalents and the American pronunciations.
I think this would also be a good book for Americans travelling to England.Speak American: A Survival Guide to the Language and Culture of the U.S.A. OverviewImagine that you're from England, or India, or Hong Kong, and your English is impeccable. But when you travel to America, you get a funny look when you tell a colleague,"I'll knock you up tomorrow at half-eight." And you can't find bangers on a single restaurant menu. You feel like you speak a foreign language-because you do! You need to know how to survive in American English, and this book will help you do it. This user-friendly guide focuses on the vocabulary that newcomers to the U.S. really need to know. Arranged by subject, from driving to shopping to eating, the book includes information on basic cultural and linguistic differences between British and American English, including particular pitfalls to watch for, and a handy glossary. Each chapter begins with a quick-reference summary of key confusable words. Americanisms, grammar, and cultural points. Offers guidance on social issues such as tipping and addressing people. Perfect for travelers, businesspeople, and students.

Discussion Starters: Speaking Fluency Activities for Advanced ESL/EFL Students ReviewOur ESL program for advanced adult speakers uses this book as a textbook in our conversation and fluency course, and as a supplement to all of our other courses. It provides great activities to get adult learners talking. The lessons are easy to adapt to your existing curriculum, or you can plan a course around them.Discussion Starters: Speaking Fluency Activities for Advanced ESL/EFL Students OverviewOne of the most common problems facing ESL teachers is the advanced speaking class in which the most confident students dominate the discussion and the weaker students quickly withdraw. Discussion Starters is designed to balance the oral participation of all the students in the class and thus promote an environment in which everyone has not only a chance but a real need to speak out. Each unit contains a relatively small number of exercises (usually around five) which provide speaking interaction about a central topic or idea. In most of these activities, students must work together in pairs or small groups to reach a conclusion about a topic. Other discussion books on the market today often use imaginary situations for discussion (e.g., "If you had a million dollars, what would you do?"). The activities and tasks in Discussion Starters are real situations from all over the world. When students are asked what they would do in a given situation or how a judge should rule in a case, all the material is real.Naturally, teachers may assign additional readings to supplement the topics in Discussion Starters; however, there is ample background material in the text to start students on their way to a discussion. Thus, students can spend their class time speaking about and discussing topics rather than reading about them. A unique and important feature of this text is the inclusion of homework exercises that call on students to sort out their ideas and opinions before coming to class. This allows all students to be prepared for the speaking activities in class and is of special importance to the weaker, less confident non- native speakers.

Speechcraft: Discourse Pronunciation for Advanced Learners (Michigan Series in English for Academic & Professional Purposes) ReviewI find this book, and the workbook that accompanies it, to be one of the few resources on the market that emphasize suprasegmentals (i.e., phrase stress, linking, message units, etc.). The presentation is detailed without being overwhelming. It is structured in a way that guides teachers in approaching diverse aspects of pronunciation and at the same time gives them ideas of exercises that they could design to give their students opportunities for further practice.Speechcraft: Discourse Pronunciation for Advanced Learners (Michigan Series in English for Academic & Professional Purposes) OverviewSpeechcraft is a multi-book project that includes one core text that can be accompanied by several different workbooks, depending on the needs of the learner. The first workbook to accompany the core text was written with international teaching assistants (ITAs) in mind, and it expands on and contextualizes the content of the core text for ITAs. The second workbook was written for anyone who needs to com-municate effectively in academic settings. All Speechcraft books have been designed for advanced non-native speakers who expect to interact with native speakers in academic and professional settings.

Clear Speech from the Start Student's Book with Audio CD: Basic Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English ReviewConventional wisdom in the ESL/EFL world holds that pronunciation should not be taught at the beginning level. It's just too technical, requiring complicated descriptions and explanations for which beginning students don't have the vocabulary.
But if there were a way to make the material accessible? Even beginners need to communicate clearly -- intelligible speech fosters successful academic, work, and social interactions, and that's got to be encouraging for the student! Judy Gilbert's well-planned approach makes clear pronunciation truly accessible to beginners. The book -- rightly so -- limits the pronunciation points to those that are most urgently needed for intelligibility. The principle areas covered are: (1) the alphabet: using letters to spell out loud for clarification, (2) decoding spelling/reading words: using simple spelling rules to predict the pronunciation of a word, (3) syllable number: developing awareness of the number of syllables in words and phrases, being sure not to add unnecessary syllables or to omit necessary ones, (4) syllable stress: lengthening stressed vowels and reducing unstressed ones, (5) word connections: linking words together (this improves both listening comprehension and the smoothness of the student's speech), (6) the music of English: the pitch contours and rhythm of the language, and (7) articulation: t/d, s/z, l/r/n, and th.
There are some very cool things in this book for pronunciation teachers and learners. For example, there are tongue shape drawings looking from the back of the tongue to the front and out the mouth. Can't picture it? You'll have to see it to believe it! Along with the traditional front and side views, this new perspective really helps you visualize what's going on inside your mouth to produce a specific sound. I only wish there were drawings for all the American English vowels and consonants!! (But then it wouldn't be a beginning textbook, would it?)
I also like the vowel pronunciation rules. Example: the letters 'ai' are pronounced like the first letter [a] in the combination. Think: straight, complaint. Then, in the appendix, a percentage is given for how often the rule works, in this case, 95% of the time. This will give the student the confidence to guess how a new word is pronounced, take 'restraint', for example, but not stress out when the rule doesn't work, as in 'plaid'.
There are many helpful graphics in the book. Two of my favorites are the extra-wide bolded letters for stressed vowels (I think you can visualize that) and the diminishing letters for continuant sounds (Thatsssokay. The storezzznearrrMain [the second and third s's, z's, and r's have decreasing font sizes]).
I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. Mostly, I do corporate accent and pronunciation training and executive speech coaching with foreign-born clients who have a high intermediate to advanced command of English. But occasionally, I am asked to train employees who have a lower level of English. This is definitely the book I'll choose for them! Trainees can apply the basic concepts they learn to company-specific vocabulary and technical terms.
I only wish all learners of North American English could start out with this book...Clear Speech from the Start Student's Book with Audio CD: Basic Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English OverviewClear Speech from the Start gives beginning students immediate help in mastering the crucial elements of English pronunciation. Stressing basic pronunciation and listening comprehension in North American English, Clear Speech from the Start concentrates on features that will have the most significant impact on a student's ability to understand and communicate with others. These features include rhythm, stress, intonation, and speech sounds that carry specific grammatical meaning. The text presents these features through kinesthetic exercises and visual and auditory modeling, thus making them accessible even to beginners. Each Student's Book comes with a student Audio CD that contains roughly one third of the exercises included in the class audio program.
