Finding God in Ancient China: How the Ancient Chinese Worshiped the God of the Bible ReviewI live and work in China. I'm often approached under the assumption that so many Westerners believe in "the God" that I probably know something of the Christian religion. One of the things I've VERY often heard from mainland Chinese is that Chinese reject Christianity because "it's Western." One may argue the validity of the claims of Christianity, but there seems to be no defense of that Christianity somehow ORIGINATED in the West... unless you're talking "west of Beijing," which is NOT what the people speaking to me are meaning.
This book seems, at least to the very few who have been able to read it here, to make the deeply impacting point that perhaps that argument isn't quite so true as they've been told it is. It's an enjoyable read, in my opinion. I can say this for sure: compared to every other Chinese author I've ever read (except Jung Chung), the author did his homework. Chinese academics and society is overflowing with what those in the West call "plagiarism." This author has done his homework. Of course, people will agree or disagree with his conclusions as they will, but the quality of his work is good.Finding God in Ancient China: How the Ancient Chinese Worshiped the God of the Bible OverviewWhile many consider early Chinese history to be composed of myths, fables, and legends, in Finding God in Ancient China author and scholar Chan Kei Thong believes that the language, stories, and rituals actually occurred during this time period and honored a creator who has since been forgotten in modern Chinese culture. According to Thong, after the division of nations at the Tower of Babel one of the groups journeyed across the Asian continent and settled in what is today the region of China. It was this group of people who established the first Chinese culture known as the Long Shan. And from this culture the first ruling dynasty, the Xia Dynasty, would emerge. Thong claims that the writings, beliefs, actions, and language conventions that were employed by the Xia Dynasty all point to a belief in the one true God; the same God who confused the languages at Babel and is today the God of the Christian faith.'Finding God in Ancient China is a remarkable achievement, a profound examination of China's cultural origins and history as a reflection of a continuous Chinese cultural sense of a connection with the divine. This book is already having a profound impact in China in a Chinese version.Everyone interested in Christianity in China should read it.'

The Apologetics Study Bible: Understand Why You Believe ReviewI must admit my biases up front. I lean towards a presuppositional apologetic. Seemingly, I would take issue with many of the articles, but I really don't. The editors sought those who are recognized in the evangelical world for the skill in both philosophical theology and applying the bible to tough questions. They did not let us down.
Pros of the Study Bible:
1. Some of the articles are simply outstanding. I can't say more. The ones by Frame, Russell Moore, Copan, and Walt Kaiser are quite good.
2. The study notes are decent, if one understands the context. It is not aiming to give an exposition of each passage, but to focus on the apologetical application of passages. Still, it gives interesting historical, archeological, and contra-cultist insights. Interestingly as a side-note, the Study Bible takes a premillennial approach to Revelation 20.
3. Wide margins. I applaud the formatters on this one. This bible has wider-margins than most. This was a huge plus in my opinion. One can legibly write thorough notes in the margin.
Cons:
1. Some of the study notes take an almost facile approach to some really hard questions. For example, Norman Geisler's attempt to demonstrate how the Apocrypha shouldn't be in Scripture. The verses he quotes against it not only do not disprove the Apocrypha, but if accepted would also disprove the book of Judges and 1 Samuel! Further, Geisler ignored essentially every good argument against the Apocrypha. This kind of shallow reasoning makes one skeptical of the overall apologetic quality. (And poor Geisler's criticism of the Apocrypha almost convinced me the Apocrypha should be in the Bible!)
2. The editors suffer from a severe myopia. For them (at least in this writing) the only challenges to the faith are a form of relativistic postmodernism (with a very simplistic discussion), evolution, and strict materialistic atheism. But as any apologist of any stripe knows, few people actually fit these above challenges. This was so fifteen years ago.
2a. The choice of apologists listed leaves one to believe that serious defending the faith only began in the last 150 years. Of course, the printing press et al did make a difference in literary output, but most of the choices represent a narrow subsection within American evangelicalism. Of course, they tip their hats to Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas, but ne'ery a word is said about the Eastern tradition (Christological controversies, Gregory Palamas, and David Bentley Hart). This is where the real ammo is. In fact, have they even heard of these people? In fact, if you do not understand the 6th Ecumenical Council, and the two energies of Christ, then your "defense" of Christ is naught.
On the other hand, though, Craig rejects Absolute Divine Simplicity, so it's something to think about.
Neutral:
The translation is the Holman Christian Standard Bible. This should be evaluated independently of the Study Bible.
The notes of the study bible take a mildly Calvinistic slant. It is not as Calvinistic as R.C. Sproul but is more Calvinistic than Geisler, Moreland, and Lane Craig (even though the last three are contributors).
I have the hardback quality. The binding is very good and quite durable. The Apologetics Study Bible: Understand Why You Believe Overview The Apologetics Study Bible will help today's Christian better understand, defend and proclaim their beliefs in this age of increasing moral and spiritual relativism. More than one-hundred key questions and articles placed throughout the volume about faith and science prompt a rewarding study experience at every reading.

Between Two Worlds: The Challenge of Preaching Today ReviewStott's modern classic, Between Two Worlds, argues that there is a chasm between the biblical world and the modern world. This chasm is bridged through the preaching and proclamation of the Word of God. It is the preacher, empowered through the Spirit, who stands in the gap between these two worlds. It is through preaching whereby the world of the Bible is brought into the world of modern hearers and modern culture is confronted with the Bible.
Stott begins by briefly surveying the history of preaching from Jesus to the 20th-Century. He continues by answering three objections, which are commonly leveled against preaching. First, he confronts the anti-authority mood of our culture by arguing that preaching should be dialogical - preaching is not a monologue but a conversation. The second objection is the ever-growing problem with the technological dominance of our culture. God is a speaking God and Christianity is very much a culture of the written and spoken word. How then is one to be heard in an ever-increasing culture of images? Stott shows that the sacraments are visual and most necessary our lives must visually reflect the message we proclaim. The last objection is the loss of confidence in the gospel. Founded upon strong conviction, Christian preaching, must regain confidence in the truth, relevance, and power of the gospel.
The heart of the book is found in chapters three and four. Chapter three highlights the theological foundations for preaching. One must have biblical convictions about God, Scripture, the Church, the pastorate, and preaching. We must allow the text to be master and preachers must recognize that they are servants to Scripture. In chapter four he proceeds to make the case that preaching is bridge-building. Modern people often question the relevance of ancient Scripture. It is the task of the preacher to show them Scripture's relevance and demand on their lives. Therefore preachers are to be men of the Word and men of the world.
In chapters five and six Stott offers help on the task of preaching. Chapter five deals with the roll of study in the life of the pastor. We are to study the Bible and the world and in doing such the purpose is not to gain intellectual knowledge but to learn to think and live more Christianly. Chapter six deals with the preparation and construction of sermons. He points to the necessity of noting the dominant thought of the text and using this as the basis and proposition statement of your sermon. Around this thought - the main point of the scriptural text - is to flow the entire sermon.
The final two chapters deal with the character of the preacher. Stott stresses that the preacher must the balance of sincerity and earnestness, courage and humility. The purpose of preaching is to both comfort and disturb the congregation. The preacher is to declare the sinfulness of humanity and the hope of the gospel of Christ. In doing so the preacher must speak to both the heart and the mind - the whole person is to be in view. Christian preaching is to be done in the humility of our human frailty yet in the power of the Spirit of God.
Stott's book is both a theological and practical argument for sound preaching. The chapter on the history of preaching, although terribly short, certainly serves to whet one's appetite for a deeper history on the preaching of God's Word. For filling in the blanks one should consult Hughes Oliphant-Old's magisterial The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures in the Worship of the Christian Church.
The book shows its age in dealing with the contemporary objections for another transmitter of information and images is the Internet. Between the Internet and TV the preacher has his work cut out for him. How is one to make the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments interesting and exciting for those who have the Internet and hundreds of television channels? It is truly a great and daunting task.
The section in which Stott makes suggestions in dealing with controversial issues is helpful. He suggests making good use of your congregation. Listen to your people and hear their opinions and ideas on such difficult questions. Let them speak and listen to their thoughts and ideas. Seek to know their hearts and minds and then preaching through the more difficult waters will be more safely charted.
The role of the preacher is a high and lofty task. Not only is he to know the Bible but he also must know his congregation and the world in which they exist. He is to be a man of the Bible and a man of the newspaper. The task of preaching is to bridge the chasm, which exists between the Biblical world and the modern world. It is a difficult yet great calling. Stott's book is a great guide to this end. It will benefit both the seasoned pastor and the preacher in training. And may this book serve as a call to reclaim the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in our preaching and ministry. To him be all the glory!Between Two Worlds: The Challenge of Preaching Today Overview###############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################

A Complete Guide to Sermon Delivery ReviewPreachers and public speakers will find this book useful. Fasol discusses the body language and pathos aspects of communication by giving the principles of proper vocal production and articulation, effective facial expression, eye contact, posture, gestures, etc. This book is written with preachers in mind, but certainly any public speaker would find it effective for bringing to mind these often-forgotten areas of communication. I don't think the title of the book ("Complete Guide...") is entirely accurate, but it is a helpful book none the less.A Complete Guide to Sermon Delivery OverviewChapter one establishes a seven-fold approach-the Disciplers' Model-to Christian teaching. This model was developed in response to a question that would not let the author go-'How should I teach so that my learners will grow in the Lord?'

The Gnostic Gospel of St. Thomas: Meditations on the Mystical Teachings ReviewWow!
There is something about this book that is saying far more than the scholars and modern academia is saying. Not only is it stylistically more interesting to read, it's practically and directly spiritual!
I'd been looking for a way to find SPIRITUALITY in the West, rather than stale dogmas, and real methods to feel connected with God, Divine Spirit, or whatever you want to call it in a practical and meaningful way. This book addresses those needs quite directly, unlike the scholars writing about Gnosticism who, at best, address those issues indirectly. I used to look up to the Eastern systems of metaphysics because they had a rich tradition of meditation and spiritual contemplation that I always felt I needed, but couldn't really connect with. But this author is coming to show me that such a spiritual richness and depth may also exist in the West!
The best part about the book is its practical use! The chapters are direct responses to each line of the Gospel of St. Thomas. There is a contemplation following each of St. Thomas' 114 sayings. This allows me to read in order, out of order, re-read sections in a nice, relaxing way as it fits into my busy schedule. Plus, each contemplation is good spiritual food for thought, so that I can read a contemplation, look back on Thomas' line and contemplate it myself to glean a little more on my own. It's the perfect book for anyone that has been looking for something more directly spiritual about Gnosticism, and more practically useful as good, solid food for one's truly spiritual considerations. The Gnostic Gospel of St. Thomas: Meditations on the Mystical Teachings OverviewOf all the "lost" gospels of the early Christian Bible, the Gospel of St. Thomas is the most well known. According to Tau Malachi, each verse of this Holy Scripture is like an "endless well of Wisdom." Drawing upon the Holy Kabbalah, contemporary Christian thought, and wisdom of the gnostic tradition, Malachi guides the reader into a true gnostic experience-a first-hand and completely unique exploration of the sacred secrets and spiritual insights in this important gnostic text. Both intuitive and interactive, the gnostic approach to faith is a sacred quest for greater knowledge, understanding, and wisdom-a deeper penetration of the Mystery. This path leads to a higher degree of the enlightenment experience or gnosis. The Gnostic Gospel of St. Thomas reveals how the reader can use each verse in this scripture as a source of daily contemplation and spiritual growth, while exploring the secrets of resurrection and ascension, the true role of St. Mary Magdalene in the early church, and other mystical and magical teachings.

Fitly Spoken: Developing Effective Communication and Social Skills ReviewI purchased this book at the recommendation of a friend who had read it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but as I turned each page, I realized what an impact it was beginning to have on me.
This is not a typical communcations book! Pastor Greg Baker has a way of clearly defining what communication really is--and more importantly, just how critical EFFECTIVE communication is in every aspect of every human being's life. I've always believed that everything in the world can be solved with good communications, and Pastor Baker certainly solidified my beliefs with his well-written roadmap to effective communcations.
The author covers practically every topic in this book. From marriage to business to children and freinds! I've been able to apply several of his methods in many different areas of my life and I've seen some pretty amazing results already. From my personal relationships to some very important business relationships, I found the tools I needed to either improve an already great relationship or to patch up a broken one.
The thing I liked the most about this book is that the author wrote in clear, concise language and offered advice and solutions throughout the whole book. I really enjoyed this book and have already thanked my friend for a great recommended read. I guess she communicated very well on just how much she thought I could benefit from this book!! =)

The Power of Spoken Faith ReviewI have been a Christian for over thirty years but my Christian walk has been a constant struggle. I call it my journey in the wilderness. The reason the children of Isreal could not enter into the promised land, which is just an example of how we apprehend/comprehend the promises of God, was because of unbelief. If we war in the flesh, it will be a constant losing battle. Only when we take up the sword of the spirit, which is the "SPOKEN" WORD of God, will we be able to start experiencing victory. Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I SPEAK unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." (emphasis added) John 6:63
If you have a Strong's Concordance look up LOGOS, it means something SAID.
I also recommend E.W. Kenyon's, "Advanced Bible Course, Studies in the Deeper Life." God Bless. The Power of Spoken Faith Overview

And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning ReviewJoel Hoffman's book, And G-d Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning, is just invaluable for in-depth study of the Bible, especially in the original language. I had thought the book was going to be some sort of analysis and criticism of the standard translations out there--he does that, mostly in the appendix, but that's not what the book is about. It is really about how to understand Biblical Hebrew. Using linguistics (in a remarkably clear and non-intimidating way), Hoffman describes the different kinds of information conveyed by a Biblical text, and then works out the methodology by which one can best understand the text. No big secret: he argues that context, the comparison of the text with other examples of the same word or phrase, is the only sure way to make sense of a doubtful passage. In the second half of the book, he uses his approach to go after some of the biggest mistranslations in the Bible: "lev" and "nefesh" from the Shema (KJV's "heart" and "soul"), "ratzach" and "chamad" from the Aseres ha'Dibros (NIV's "murder" and "covet" in the "Ten Commandments"), "achotah, kalah" from the Song of Songs (NIV's "my sister, my bride"), "alma" from Isaiah (NIV's "virgin"), among others. In other words you get some really outstanding Torah study, that can really raise your understanding of the Bible.

Just as outstanding book. Really, a necessary book. I haven't been so impressed by a book since first reading James Kugel.

You all have to read it.

God Has Spoken ReviewThis wonderful book is written with the premise our churches suffer from "a famine of hearing the words of our Lord" despite the availability and advantages of a plethora of Biblical tools, expositors, and communicative mediums. Packer analyzes the reasons for the churches' spiritual lethargy, which has evolved due to faulty presuppositions and perceptions that have indoctrinated themselves into the Christian mindset through modern Biblical criticism and current philosophical trends. Packer addresses these errant views and reestablishes the proper Biblical precepts necessary for the church to regain its perspicacity and vitality in studying the Word of God.
God Has Spoken OverviewIn this sequel to Knowing God, J. I Packer maintains that anyone who wants to know God will want to know as much as he or she can of what is in the Bible. Here, he presents the case for the reliability of the Bible and urges us to return with open hearts to reading God's word and to discover its overwhelming power in our lives.

Notes From The Tilt-A-Whirl: Wide-Eyed Wonder in God's Spoken World ReviewIn the span of one paragraph, N.D. Wilson made me break out in goosebumps then made me laugh and cry at the same time. His writing in Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl from Thomas Nelson Publishers evokes emotion like the best fiction, scratches the brain like the best philosophy, and stirs a love for Creator and creation like the best theology.
His bursts of thought are not always clear-cut and linear, rather they seem to be confusing and unrelated at times. As his ideas shape the chapters, however, and the chapters form the book, a step back reveals a beautiful piece of work.
And this, I think, was no accident. Wilson's premise is that the universe we live in is a work of art and the masterpiece of The Artist. It is a drama, a play, and God is the Author. And so, just as his writing style reflects, there are surprises, twists, and turns. It doesn't progress in an uneventful, gradual incline.
The best dramas have real tragedies, the best paintings have both shadow and light. Thus it makes sense that the best of all possible worlds made by an Artist/Author will have real tragedies, both shadow and light.
My favorite book of the year, hands down.Notes From The Tilt-A-Whirl: Wide-Eyed Wonder in God's Spoken World OverviewFrom Publishers WeeklyThis theological ride thrills with a colorful whir of profound and profoundly amusing meditations on creation, existence and God.Product DescriptionA visual, poetic exploration of the narrative nature of the world and the personality of the Poet behind it all. When Nate Wilson looks at the world around him, he asks "What is this place? Why is this place? Who approved it? Am I supposed to take it seriously?" What could such an outlandish, fantastical world say about its Creator? In these sparkling chapters, Wilson gives an aesthetic examination of the ways in which humanity has tried to make sense of this overwhelming carnival ride of a world. He takes a whimsical, thought-provoking look at everything from the "magic" of quantum physics, to nature's absurdities, to the problem of evil, evolution and hell. These frequently humorous, and uniquely beautiful portraits express reality unknown to many Christians-the reality of God's story unfolding around and among us. As the author says, "Welcome to His poem. His play. His novel. His comedy. Let the pages flick your thumbs."

Prayers Plainly Spoken ReviewHauerwas doesn't just pray in a plain fashion ...
The classical language of the Christian tradition is brilliantly woven in, with snippets of belly-splitting subversiveness (e.g. his prayer to the Ultimate Reality at a Duke University academic luncheon). Hauerwas' enemies may like to retitle this book "Prayers Vulgarly Spoken", but he also has a prayer for them, too!
This only gets a 4 star, because some of the other theology books I've rated are true classics (in comparison). But this does not take away from the FUN and CONVICTION that Hauerwas brings to the stuffy halls of theological reflection.Prayers Plainly Spoken OverviewA collection of prayers, in everyday language, that display an invigorating faith and demonstrate how Christians can pray with all the passion, turbulence and life of the ancient psalmist. The book is divided into three sections: "Beginnings"; "Living in Between"; and "Endings".--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Greatest Words Ever Spoken: Everything Jesus Said About You, Your Life, and Everything Else (Thinline Ed.) ReviewThe Greatest Words Ever Spoken is a remarkable book! At first blush, it appears to be a Topical Bible, but it is so much more. First of all, these are the words of Jesus on a myriad of topics: Anger, Security, Money, Mercy, Truth, Fear, Compassion, Conflict, Murder, Reconciliation, Adultery, Lust, The Soul, Women, The Family, Unrighteous Leaders, Parents, Foolishness, The Worth of an Individual, Happiness, and etc., etc. Just reading Christ's words on these subject all GROUPED TOGETHER in one place has an amazing affect. And it is amazing how detailed His words really are. This is an amazing experience: strengthening, encouraging, admonishing, and corrective to one's life.
What is odd, but I suppose not given the author's purpose, is that Steven Scott (when he started his exploration of the Words of Jesus) was decided that this would be just for his own encouragement and a dicipleship journey. Friends found out and asked him to publish. And so, for the book to have the positive growth affecta was, in a way, planned. That this book would be a tool of growth and encouragement, is something I didn't expect but certainly appreciate.
The wonderful part of the book is each Section's Introduction. Steven Scott has masterfully given a treatsie on dicipleship and growth in Christ in his short "introductions." This is worth the price of the book by itself.
This is one of those treasures that you will turn to again and again. It will be on the shelf nearest your desk and so that the Words of Christ will remain in your heart and life.

It offers a comprehensive approach in teaching and it has been updated to cover the modern Greek language. All That the Prophets have Spoken. ReviewThis book does an amazing job of explaining GOD's plan of salvation revealed to us throughout the Bible. Many Christians and non-Christians claim they know what Biblical Christianity is when in fact they haven't got a clue. I highly recommend this book to everyone; both Christians and non-Christians. If you claim to be a Christian then you need to know and understand GOD's word and HIS plan of salvation. If you are not a Christian then I would highly recommend that you read this book as well to get an understanding of the message presented to us in the Bible. Before you reject something shouldn't you at least know what you are rejecting. The author did an amazing job of going through the prophets and showing what GOD revealed to us through them about HIMSELF, HIS love for us and HIS plan for us. This is one of the best books I've ever read and I highly recommend it to everyone! It gives you a clear understand of the consistent message found in the Bible. All That the Prophets have Spoken.
