Pronunciation for Advanced Learners of English Student's book ReviewThe conversations sound realistic and unrehearsed. At first glance, the illustrative technique makes the illustrations look cluttered. But the system doesn't take long to learn and is easy to use.
From the introduction:
"It is emphasized that the speakers you will hear will be participants involved in some communicative event, that is to say, they will be saying something that they think is of interest or importance to someone else. They will not be providing model sentences or lists of words for you to imitate. And your own aim will be to take part as effectively as you can in similar events in which you have your own ideas to communicate. You will not be satisfied with simply demonstrating that you have mastered an awkward vowel sound or a difficult sequence of consonant sounds. If the course is to be useful, at your level of competence, the emphasis must necessarily be upon communicative use rather than upon demonstration.
It is for this last reason that the course differs in the way it is organized from most others that are concerned with pronunciation. It makes its first objective an increased awareness of how the intonation system of English is used. This can only be done if we assume that language is being used to communicate, for intonation is the means whereby we organize our language into patterns that fit the present communicative need.
Part 1 of the first unit is concerned, therefore, with how speech is presented by the speaker, not as separate words, but as tone units. Tone units are the building blocks out of which all spoken communication is constructed. Thereafter, work in intonation is introduced unit by unit alongside work on individual on individual 'sounds' (the vowel and consonant 'segments' of traditional pronunciation practice).
There is one very straightforward reason for doing this: in the speech of advanced learners, departures from what we regard as desirable are said to be more often matters of intonation than matters of how particular sounds are made. There is more to it than this, however. If we want to focus upon the individual 'sounds' of a language, and to do so usefully, we must take account of what happens to them when the language is used to communicate. This really means being aware of how such sounds are affected by the intonational shape of the stretch of speech they occur in. And this in turn means focusing on the tone units that we find in any sample of used language.
Intonation is not, on the whole, popular among language teachers or learners. By giving it so central a place in the course, we may seem to making things harder rather than easier. Intonation has a reputation for being difficult and 'slippery.' It is true that people tend easily to lose confidence in their ability to get to grips with it. The truth may well be, however, that this is precisely because it has not been given a very prominent place in most teaching procedures. Through being left out, it has acquired the kind of mystery that so often surrounds things that we think are beyond our understanding. And mystification about something so fundamental to spoken communication as intonation is clearly not a good thing! Being aware that there is a whole area of the language you know next to nothing about hardly makes for self-confidence. This is particularly true when your told - as you probably have been told at some time - that intonation is immensely important! And building self-confidence is central to the aims of this cour."

New Interchange 2 Lab guide: English for International Communication (New Interchange English for International Communication) ReviewHaving never used the first edition of this series, I picked up New Interchange Level 1 so that I could have a structured series to help my students learn general basic English skills. I have been pleased, and find that overall it is a good series to teach from. THE GOOD: Each chapter in New Interchange has a good variety of skills to learn and practice. Students are constantly engaged in reading, writing, listening, speaking, learning new vocabulary and practicing new grammar rules. The content isn't too heavy, and the book makes good use of color and white space so as not to overwhelm the student. I find that the structure of each chapter is constant and reliable so that the students become used to how things are done. The tapes and Teacher's Guide are invaluable! The workbook provides additional practice of concepts that the students have just learned in the student book. All of these resources combine to make it incredibly easy for me (as a teacher) to prepare and give good lessons. THE BAD: I have found that my students are often confused with the grammar exercises. What may seem like clear-cut explanations to a native English speaker obviously aren't that clear to the learners. I am also a little saddened by the fact that each chapter really doesn't go into great depth for any one skill or theme. Each skill is presented, learned and practiced in what sometimes feels like a rushed manner. I have also found it difficult to present an entire chapter in two one-and-a-half hour sessions, as the authors suggest.OVERALL: A good series with lots of skills practice. It is very useful for learners who want to study a variety of general English skills. Very nice for overworked teachers who don't have a lot of time to prepare lessons.New Interchange 2 Lab guide: English for International Communication (New Interchange English for International Communication) OverviewNew Interchange is a multi-level series for adult and young-adult learners of English from the beginning to the high-intermediate level.The Lab Guide can be purchased for use with the Lab Audio Cassettes. The guide provides varying levels of support for the learner: Part A contains only the directions to each exercise, Part B contains the script for each exercise without the responses, and Part C contains the complete script for each exercise with the responses.

Clear Speech Teacher's Resource Book: Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in American English ReviewI got this book to help one of my advanced level students with her pronunciation. I was surprised at what the book really focuses on, and I have found it to be quite helpful. THE GOOD: 1) This book is different from other pronunciation books in that it only spends part of the time focusing on the sounds of English letters. Rather, it is organized into chapters based on other features of English, such as rhythm, linking, syllable length, stress, intonation and reduction. This is a wonderful "next step" for students who have had adequate practice with the sounds of English letters, but still have an accent. 2) It provides practice exercises that allow the student to practice more than one thing at a time. For example, one exercise allows the student to practice linking words while practicing the "sh" sound. 3) I think that the most valuable part of this book is the Clear Listening and Clear Speaking test at the beginning of the book. These allow teachers to get very specific responses from students, and then focus on the problem areas.THE BAD: While the book is great at helping students practice consonant sounds, it doesn't give much practice or help with vowel sounds. This is really my only complaint with this otherwise wonderful book. OVERALL: A great book that will help students fine tune their English speech. I recommend it for high-intermediate or advanced students. If students are looking for a good way to reduce their accents, or make themselves more understood by Americans, or even understand North American English better themselves then I highly recommend this book.Clear Speech Teacher's Resource Book: Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in American English OverviewPronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English.
